About this listen

Five years after a tragic expedition put New Hope Island back in the headlines, past-his-prime crime author Dennis Thorpe leads a writers' retreat to that secluded corner of the Hebrides.... The group is never seen again.

Ruthie Gillespie, the beautiful, heavily tattooed, hard-drinking author of dark tales for children, was supposed to be among their number, but something stopped her at the eleventh hour, and it isn't long before the police come knocking. With her escape tying her irrevocably to the case, Ruthie falls deeper and deeper into a web of dark magic and darker secrets as it becomes clear that the writers' pasts are not what they seem.

How far can you take an investigation when your own life is threatened? Do you continue, knowing that you must find the answers before the island claims another victim? Or do you run and hope that it never catches up with you?

It reminds me of M.R. James, but with a style and delivery of its own. Great character development and a sense of atmosphere

love it, written with style

The first book was very gripping and powerful. This sequel is somewhat weaker, with the author trying to tie up all the loose ends.

A little bit of a letdown

The reader used the same voice and inflections for every character, so I found it difficult to differentiate characters and keep up with the story. I actually had to listen to portions multiple times to figure out what was going on. I did have a good plot and I did enjoy listening...just have gotten spoiled by other audio books that do different voices which makes it easier for me to multitask

good story

I love the narrator, so even though the story starts out the same, even though you think "ughhh, just a revisit", keep reading! After the first bit the story twists, turns and becomes its own book. Worth it, enjoy ;-)

Yes, worth it;-)

I listened to the first book and wanted to find out what would happen next. i was not totally hooked on the story but it was entertaining enough to make me go for the 2nd and then the 3rd story. It was not scary but it was a bit creepy at times. If you like historic sounding stories this has a bit of made up history that is a bit interesting. The performance was well done. The story line was not terrible but not great. i give it 4 starts because i did listen to the entire series.

Good Performance Decent Story

An excellent followup to The Colony, and imo better than it's progenitor... A bit of horror, but mor of a psychological thriller w/ supernatural and gothic elements... I thought the story flowed well w/ an easy pace accented w/ good setting and imagery... The underlying mystery is put together well and has some delightfully unexpected twists... Perhaps a little too much fate and Deus ex Machina nudging the story along, but not annoyingly so... The narration is excellent and fits the somber mood... Worth the credit if you like a thoughtful composition that doesn't heavily rely on gratuitous gore and farsical spookiness to engage you...

Satisfying Second Sojourn

The author has created a fascinating sequel by assembling both a familiar and original combination of successful elements. I loved the new characters: They blend well with story lines from the first novel. Totally satisfying follow up. To the author - Please do not wait so long to give us the next novel in this series!

Fascinating Sequel!!!!

What a great story, the narrator is spot on and such an agreeable voice. Classic ghost story, leaving most to our imagination. Goes perfect with the first book. I'm onto the third book by FG Cottam. Love it

Classic Ghost Story

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Not re-writing the exact same book. I mean EXACT! Down to the save the day ending with guess what? A Book! Seriously? I am so pissed I spent a credit on this I could scream. If Audible didn't let us return books I would scream..

Would you ever listen to anything by F. G. Cottam again?

I don't know. I'm not generally a "throw the baby out with the bath water" kind of girl... but if he thinks it was ok to present this book as a "Second" in the series (when it should have said it was a revised version of the first) then I don't really trust him.

Any additional comments?

I am just really bummed, and shocked that in the prior reviews no one mentioned the fact that this was in no way, shape, or form, a "new" story.

UM... How stupid do you think we are?

What would have made Dark Resurrection better?

First, there were too many story similarities between this and the first book in the series. General storyline down to specific quotes from characters (i.e. McIntire talking about being responsible for sending people to the island). REALLY?? You needed to learn that lesson a second time and go through exactly the same realization process? Second, make it scary.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Hopefully something scary... they are hard to find.

What does David Rintoul bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Lack of a headache. Seriously, I listen to audiobooks mostly because reading gives me migraines... but the narration was fine. I actually really liked the sinister voices done in the first book. I'm sorry they weren't put into play in this book.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I really couldn't even finish the last hour and 15 minutes of it.... maybe there was something redeeming in there. But it seemed to be heading for a similar ending as the first book, and I already heard that.

Didn't I already listen to this?
