About this listen

A romantic cabin getaway doesn't go exactly as planned.

High up on the windswept cliffs of Pale Peak, Faye and Felix celebrate their new engagement. But soon, a chorus of ghastly noises erupts from the nearby woods: the screams of animals, the cries of children, and the mad babble of a hundred mournful voices. A dark figure looms near the windows in the dead of night, whispering to Faye. As the weather turns deadly, Felix discovers that his terrified fiancée isn't just mumbling in her sleep—she's whispering back.

fantastic

This story is very Lovecraftian. It's an excellent example of horror and terror. I highly recommend it.

Great until the end

Would have been a great book, but the last 10 minutes was idiotic and unneeded. Otherwise good

Entertaining horror story

I decided to give this book a try given the hype it has received and the various reviews mostly separating readers into the “love it” or “didn’t love it” categories.

The narration certainly added to the creepy atmosphere of the story. At times, I was as queasy and nauseous as the characters. The narrator’s ability to tap into this physical response from me places the narration into 5-star category.

The story was creepy and at times the “writing” in my opinion seemed raw and unpolished but that’s what made Stolen Tongues authentic as it wasn’t being dragged down by some imagined sophistication on the writer’s part. Blackwell has written an entertaining book and that’s exactly what I was hoping to listen to.

The only part of the audible edition that threw me off and threatened to dampen the experience was the “author’s explanation” at the end of the book, so I clicked the pause button on the final few words.

A very spooky read

Overall this is a great spooky book that will creep you out! I feel overall, the author did a great job of keeping the reader engaged, with enough detail to make it feel visceral without superfluous information. I also appreciate that the author weaves in Native American lore in a respectful way that provides representation without creeping into stereotypes. Overall, a good read that will make you feel like something is watching you through the windows at night 👀

My only slight complaint is that the narrator, at times, seemed like he was making the main character shout/talk really loud in dialogue at times where it didn’t seem to fit the mood. Otherwise, he did fine, especially in the thrilling scenes.

Jump Scare city!!

I searched for a horror book that would really scare me in a Facebook group. Several people suggested this book for the jump scares. I’ve never had a jump scare from a book, but I was not disappointed! This book has an awesome story line, great narration, and the writing style really felt like I was watching a movie. 10/10!

I think it’s a great story but…

The story over all was great. Creepy at parts and good characters. But dude. Has the world gone so soft that you have to make an entire chapter at the end defending yourself on why you wrote about native beings? I mean come on. That honestly almost ruined the entire thing for me. Take that out.

Entertaining, educational, and terrifying

I did half of this book on Audible and half paperback. I thought the story was amazing, but it dragged a little towards the end. The narration is worth the price of both combined. The narrator did such a fantastic job, he's now the standard for all horror audiobooks. A tip of the hat to the author that did some serious research on the Native American culture that owns this legendary monster. He did good work. Definitely a book every horror reader should own.
