About this listen
Darla Edmunds has faced a lot of challenges in her 17 years: her dad died in a farming accident when she was 14, and her mother retreated into hyper-religiosity, leaving Darla to run the family farm almost single-handedly. But those struggles pale in comparison to the one she faces after the Yellowstone super-volcano erupts, plummeting the world - and Darla's small corner of Iowa - into a cataclysmic natural disaster.
Darla's Story is book 0.5 of the Ashfall trilogy (or should it be called a three-and-a-half-ology?) It's told from Darla's perspective, beginning with the eruption and ending when an injured stranger keels over in her barn. If you're new to the world of Ashfall, Darla's Story is a great place to start. Enjoy!

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. Loved seeing Darla's story.
I'm a big fan of the Ashfall series and had already read this when it first came out but I decided to try the audio and see. Well I loved it!! Sarah Chevalier did a great job with Darla. She really captured her spirit and drive. I thoroughly enjoyed her performance.
The story is from Darla's POV from the eruption till when she meets Alex. Now there isn't anything new in this that we didn't already know from the first book but I loved seeing it actually from Darla's POV and not just told by her. You truly get a sense of how tough and resilient she is and it just makes me love her character more.
If you're new to the Ashfall series, I urge you to read it. Mike Mullin is a very talented author and the series as a whole is phenomenal. If you're unsure then start with Ashfall and then read this, you won't be sorry!!

Darla comes to Life!
The Ashfall series by Indiana Author, Mike Mullin, would not be complete without the story of Darla. Mullin created a very strong female character in the initial book, "Ashfall". The background of this character, Darla, adds a rich depth to the other full-length stories. It is evident in his treatment of this story that Mullin did not create her to be a prop for the main character, but as a partner character. In the initial story, Darla's innate creativity in the realm of survival skills intrigued this reader. In the audible performance of "Darla's Story", through the voice of Sarah Chevaliex, Darla comes to life in a way that connects the reader to the character in a very personal way.
It is a dream of this fan that this series will someday soon be made into movies..(with Taylor Swift playing Darla)...until then, the audible books brings them closer to reality.
Thank you Mike Mullin for your brilliance!

Darla's story
Always nice to get insight on minor characters from books I enjoy. This was an interesting view on who Darla is at her base. Well narrated, great pacing, and easy to listen to. Great job all around.

Ok book if you are a fan of the series.
I am glad that the author released this story after the main trilogy and not before. If this had been the opening act, I feel certain I wouldn't have bothered to read the next. Which would have been a tragedy because the Ashfall trilogy is a wonderful story, where in you really empathize with the characters and their struggles. I feel that Darla's Story doesn't add much to what we learn about her past in Ashfall. I would have preferred a novel that explores her future rather than a tiny snippet of time just before Ashfall begins.
