About this listen

Written just 40 years after David Livingstone’s death, this admiring account of the famous missionary’s life and work takes us deep into the “dark continent” of 19th-century Africa, where he labored to bring “Christianity, commerce, and civilization.” A national hero in Victorian Britain, Livingstone earned fame as an explorer and scientific investigator, an antislavery crusader, and imperial reformer, as well as in the role of a Protestant missionary and martyr who eventually died in Africa of malaria.

From the book: “In those forty years great and astounding changes have been witnessed in the Continent which is associated with his fame….But nothing that has happened since has diminished by a single laurel the wreath he won, and will wear for ever….Livingstone is greatest, not as a scientist, nor an explorer, but as a man and a missionary.”

Charles Silvester Horne (1865–1914) studied theology at Mansfield College, Oxford, became a well-known Congregationalist minister, and additionally served as a member of the British parliament for Ipswich, England.

Interesting concise overview of an incredible life

I just listened to the podcast episodes on Martyrs and Missionaries about the life of Henry Morton Stanley and Livingstone. But were incredible men! I was shocked to hear that the infamous line, "Dr Livingstone I presume" was NOT actually said upon their first meeting. I know, I was shocked too!

I still have a hard time seeing Livingstone as a missionary. He was certainly an incredible man of faith and fortitude. And hearing this more lengthy account of his life I certainly feel less critical of him and more in sheer awe of all he endured and all He did for Christ and Africa. But, calling him a missionary just seems like a stretch. His aim was charting Africa, discovering the source of the Nile, helping to bring the slave trade to an end and paving the way for future missionaries.

An enjoyable listen, well read.

A perfect telling of an extraordinary man

Most people only know David Livingston as the explorer whom Mr Stanley found. He was so much greater and an amazing servant to, not only God, but to all around him.

A man worth every reader’s interest and attention-good presentation

Because this book is based on Livingston’s journals, it is direct and fair. The famous Scot is fleshed out and followed through 5 decades or so of dedication to the cause of exploration, but more than that, emancipation and salvation.
