Edgar Award Finalist, Best Paperback Original, 2005 - A Dan Shaw Thriller

Dan Shaw, night school law student, ex-Army cop, and part-time investigator for hotshot attorney Thomas Petrie, has 57 hours to find a man who may already be dead. Peter Falconer is one of the golden boys of Bell Harbor, Florida - or he soon will be after inheriting the family fortune. But what seems to be yet another typical case of murder for profit and passion is about to take a sudden U-turn. For Shaw is about to uncover a brand of thrill killing whose sheer evil he can’t begin to fathom. And Shaw had better get to the bottom - and fast - or the hunt taking him from the Keys to the Caribbean and into the eye of a tropical storm will cost him his life.

Ron Faust is the author of 14 previous thrillers. He has been praised for his "rare and remarkable talent" (Los Angeles Times), and several of his books have been optioned for films. Before he began writing, he played professional baseball and worked at newspapers in Colorado Springs, San Diego, and Key West.

An unexpectedly good book

The plot was different than any I had read before. I will read the next book because I grew to like the characters and to know them. Glad Audible recommended this book. The narrator was outstanding.

Too wordy when it doesn't have to be

Almost lost me with all the monotone overwritten sea voyaging. Not intended to be a spoiler, but good grief! I think a lot of the descriptions and storyline during the hurricane should have hit the editor's floor. The narrator almost comically changes the pitch and drawl of his monotone voice for the different characters; male and female. I found it very distracting.

Interesting listen

This is an interesting listen (with some triggers)!!

What I liked the most about this story is that the main character, Dan Shaw, was not a take-no-prisoners good bad guy. He was simply a law student doing a job. When he got into the deep end, it made sense. What didn't make sense is why they did what they did to pay the ransom. We are talking Bad Guy 101, the top five things you should not do. Welp, they did them all.

I did enjoy the narration. There were quite a few different approaches to this story and the narrator did make them all believable. I don't think I will take the plunge on book two though.

I will continue with This series of books

I enjoyed this book immensely but sometimes I had to get my dictionary out And I don't feel like I am a stupid man But some of is wording I did not recognize but that's all right I got through it and enjoyed it As I said immensely on that level

Poor narration

The book was probably very good but the narration was so poor I couldn't get past chapter 3.

Not excellent, but very good,

Some romance, some stressful situations, some stupid moves, some parts where I could not put the book down. This book was hard to rate but I think it deserves a 4 star review. Definitely recommended.

Excellent Writing great visualization

I have to admit after I start the book it was not my kind of story and that's why I didn't give it five stars however I couldn't put the book down the writing was so spectacular! this is what I call an excellent writer and the narrating was absolutely intriguing. regardless of what kind of story you're interested in I recommend this book this is one of the best books I have read so far or listen to.

Much Better Than I Expected

When I saw 'detective book written by former baseball player' I didn't hold much hope for this book but was pleasantly surprised. I hope the rest of Ron Faust's books are this enjoyable. Audible has 15 of his books and 13 of them are free. If the next one I read is as good as this one I'm going to have to pay for one.

Good stuff

The main highlights for me were a clear prose, an engaging story told from the first-person perspective by a likable MC and a strong narration. Highly recommended.
