About this listen

Having just graduated from college, Jason and Eddie are ready to let loose and embark on a cross-country road trip. After some killer partying at a rock music festival in Nevada, they head out into the desert with girls and adventure on their minds. Their situation takes a dark turn, however, when they lose direction and find themselves at the entrance of a ghost town in the bowels of the sprawling desert. The residents turn out to be . . . a little off.

Meanwhile, Carrie has just found herself in the depths of a murky lair. Quick reflexes aid in her concealment, but she soon discovers the utter horrors that lurk within the dark recesses. Survival ultimately depends on her strength and cunning.

Tensions escalate as Jason, Eddie, and Carrie come to grips with their new chilling realities. All the while, a dark evil begins to reveal itself. For within this stretch of desolate landscape exists a cannibal death cult, and they have an insatiable lust for blood.

It’s kill or be killed—and as the bloodshed intensifies, so does the fierce will to live.

Death Cult is splatterpunk: There are graphic scenes of gore and violence.

A Great 80's Horror Novella!

You know, sometimes you just need to watch a couple of unsuspecting victims, get stranded in a dessert and end up in the hands of a death cult. It really helps to give you a sense of safety and comfort in knowing that you're not the one who has to go through that situation. Instead you get to live vicariously through whatever victims Janelle Schiecke decides to put through this novella that could easily be the plot of a good old fashioned 80's horror movie.

Not only did Janelle cook up both a spooky setting, as well as an neoteric rendition of a classic horror trope plot, but she also did an amazing job writing the characters. The most impressive thing for me was that she wrote some incredibly three-dimensional male characters. Jason and Eddie read as if they were characters written by a male author who has experienced a brotherly sibling relationship in their life, while still adhering to those 80's horror tropes. And just as Janell does an amazing job writing these characters, Edward Baker does a fantastic job bringing these characters to life with his narration. Each character is it's own performance and at no time did I feel like couldn't differentiate one from the other.

In conclusion, if you like watching 80's horror movies and want to read something similar, give this a go. I'm confident that it won't disappoint.

Whoa!

So I follow someone on X that had reposted you saying you got your first review on here and I was intrigued, so I bought it. And boy am I so glad I did! You have a real talent! To make this a true 80s horror trope novel, you have to make a second one of course!!! What was wild for me is that my name is Jade and I also work with tarot and hearing Jade in the book who also does 😉 made me giggle…but then hearing that Carrie was in a horrible car accident and never wanted to feel vulnerable again was another wild thing for me-because I myself was violently injured on my 31st birthday in 2016 by a drunk driver, resulting in my right arm and right foot needing to be reattached. So I felt incredibly kindred to her, and now I look forward to more!!! I could see this totally becoming a movie. Now, I am off to go and get your other book, ghost room. 😆💖😆Thank you!!!
Oh and for others, if you love horror, get this book!

A gruesome fest of fun!

This is a fantastic story for fans of old 80s horror movies. Between powerful descriptions that put the reader right in the middle of the violence & an intriguing plot, I’d absolutely recommend this book!
