Publisher's summary
A loving father and his new wife set out to pick up his kids for a scheduled weekend visit-but never suspected they were walking into a death trap. A handwritten note instructed Alan and Terra Bates to enter the back door of his ex-wife's Alabama home. A day later their charred bodies were found hundreds of miles away, wrapped in blankets, in a burned-out car's trunk on a desolate Georgia road. At Jessica McCord's house, law enforcement officials found windows covered in blankets, a cache of weapons and ammunition, carpets torn up, new tile on the floors, and the couch missing. Then they learned about the nasty divorce and bitter custody battle that had landed Jessica in jail. Along with her new police officer husband, Jessica became the prime suspect in this brutal double murder.

Story
Iowa housewife Tracey Pittman Roberts seemed to have it all: natural beauty, three loving children, and a fairy-tale second marriage to a wealthy, handsome businessman. But beneath the happy façade was a woman who used lies, manipulation, sex, ugly allegations, blackmail - and even murder - to serve her own selfish ends. In 2001, police rushed to Tracey's home after a shooting left her vulnerable young neighbor dead. Tracey claimed it was an act of self-defense. Nine gunshot wounds - and a decades-long trail of extortion and fraud - said otherwise.

"A Rose for Her Grave" - the principal story of this collection - vividly recreates the cautionary tale of Randy Roth, a misogynistic sociopath from the Pacific Northwest whose rage was directed primarily at women and children. Addicted to his own greed, Roth exercised a powerful aura of control over his victims, using his ability to charm and boyish good looks to lower their defenses. By the time they saw the reality of the madness in his eyes, it was usually too late.

Story
A ship's pilot legendary for guiding mammoth freighters through the narrows of Puget Sound, Rolf Neslund was a proud Norwegian, a ladies' man, and a beloved resident of Washington State's idyllic Lopez Island. Virtually indestructible even into his golden years, he made electrifying headlines more than once: after a ship he was helming crashed into the soaring West Seattle Bridge, causing millions in damages; and following his inexplicable disappearance at age 80. Was he a suicide, a man broken by one costly misstep? Had he run off with a lifelong love? Or did a trail of gruesome evidence lead to the home Rolf shared with his wife, Ruth?

Story
On June 9, 2008, the butchered body of Travis Alexander was found in his Mesa, Arizona, home. The grisly nature of his death made instant headlines: With 29 knife wounds, his throat slit, and a gunshot to the head, Travis was left to die. The prime suspect in the case was Alexander's ex-girlfriend, the attractive and soft-spoken Jodi Arias. Though Arias initially said that she was nowhere near the scene of crime, little about this case was as it seemed, and before long she had been caught lying to police. As the investigation progressed, her lies evolved multiple times before finally resting on an appalling claim: She had killed Travis in self-defense.

Excellent True Crime
I'm a big fan of this author, although there have been a couple I didn't like. (only because they are a bit too much for me to stomach).
This is a very sad story. The people behind the crime are beyond horrible. I can never wrap my head around some peoples' blatant disregard for life. I'm not at all surprised this couple found each other. They were a perfect match :( At first I though Jeff was just a dumb guy who would do whatever his wife dictated but as I reached the end I could see he had absolutely no moral compass either.
It was well written and researched, as all M. William Phelps books are and I couldn't stop listening until it was over.
I did wonder what happened to those poor kids. That wasn't mentioned. I sure hope the Bates family got them.
Narrator did a fine job.

Decent story about dirtbags
I had trouble with the timeline-jumps in the first third of the book, but it all works out okay in the end. Well, not for Jessica or anyone else in the story. Hopefully Karma eventually delivers.

Good author - but got sick of how EVIL she is!
Sickening and borderline., and so cold blooded! Im at a loss of words at the devastation . 2nd husband. Just agree with her bc it’s easier?? What a scummy creepy MF. Just rot in prison also- bc Death would be too easy! - unless it’s the chair. i give the Author kudos. Btw- Way to go, cold blooded killer’s mom!

Great for fans of true crime!
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this true crime book! Comes off a little dated but all in all definitely worth the listen!

Crazy Jessica
I enjoyed the story. I've seen it on one of those ID shows or Snapped but it was nice to fill in the blanks of everything else. Good listen!!!
