About this listen

THE INSTANT #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER (SUNDAY TIMES, UK) • The highly anticipated return of "irresistible" (New York Times) private eye Jackson Brodie in the newest installment of the bestselling series hailed as "unputdownable" by Time

“How delicious to have Jackson Brodie back, this time in a story that starts off in Agatha Christie's world but soon becomes a landscape that could only have been crafted from the pen of the incomparable Kate Atkinson.”–Ian Rankin, author of the Inspector Rebus Novels

Welcome to Rook Hall. The stage is set. The players are ready. By night’s end, a murderer will be revealed.

In his sleepy Yorkshire town, ex-detective Jackson Brodie is staving off boredom and malaise. His only case is the seemingly tedious matter of a stolen painting. But Jackson soon uncovers a string of unsolved art thefts that lead him down a dizzying spiral of disguise and deceit to Burton Makepeace, a formerly magnificent estate now partially converted into a hotel hosting Murder Mystery weekends.

As paying guests, impecunious aristocrats and old friends collide, we are treated to Atkinson’s most charming and fiendishly clever mystery yet, one that pays homage to the masters of the genre—from Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers to the modern era of Knives Out and Only Murders in the Building.

Critic reviews

"Hilarious. . . Agatha Christie fans will recognize the territory. . . Atkinson's funniest book yet."Minnesota Star Tribune

"Harkens back to classic detective fiction. . . [Brodie's] sixth adventure [is] open to all—to Atkinson aficionados who will lap up this latest installment in the series, and to newcomers who can enjoy it as both a standalone work and a suitable entry-point to Brodie's world. . . Boldly original. . . Gripping. . . Atkinson at her most playful. She impresses with her tightly constructed, satisfyingly complex mystery laced with Agatha Christie references, and with her observations of modern life and human nature"The Boston Globe

"[The] singular greatness [of the Jackson Brodie series] lies in Atkinson's celebration of coincidence and fortuity, her wayward plots whose threads become cunningly entwined, and, not least, her mordant wit. . . Atkinson's brilliant wit, dark humor and undimmed relish for human awfulness are still very much intact and are displayed throughout [DEATH AT THE SIGN OF THE ROOK]. . . Highly entertaining"The Washington Post

Always a pleasure to read K. Atkinson

Jackson Brody, witty prose, multiple story lines that converge nicely at the end…what’s not to like?

Big fan, but

I love KA, especially the Todd family books. The Jackson mysteries are good too, but this was disappointing. Perhaps this should be the end of them.

Just a hoot!

Kate Atkinson is one of my favorite authors! Her books always take me on a wonderful journey. I love the Jackson Brody series and Death at the sign of the Rook was just a fun romp into the manor mystery trope. I enjoyed it because I have become bored with every story out there being either a gross serial killer or an even grosser pathological killer! This was just a fun read, period! Great narration, too!

One of Atkins’ best

Jackson Brodie’s return as a PI is his 7th decade of life is delightful. This is a very smart, very literary mystery in the style of Agatha Christie, whose fans are likely to love Mr. Brodie and Detective Reggie Case, but really you should begin with the first book in the Jackson Brodie series, and proceed in order. Start with Case Histories.

Great narration

An entertaining addition to Kate Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie series. Jason Isaac’s narration is perfect. This was a good listen.

The Caper of the Stolen (possibly Raphael) Art Work of a woman and a weasel (or is it another animal?)

Very meandering and dryly funny. Eventually all the characters and stories come together, which is Kate Atkinson style in the Jackson Brody series. She delves deep into what makes people tick and presents it all with a quirky and sometimes sarcastic sense of humor. I love Jackson so will listen through all the seemingly nonsensical detail to learn how he puts all of the pieces together and solves the crime. If you don’t have patience for that then you probably won’t like this, or other Jackson Brody books. I also find Atkinson’s portrayal of what is inside the Brit’s heads quite interesting and funny, especially the aristocracy. Their thinking is usually so different from here in the US. Much has changed for the Aristocratic Brits. They have run out of funds to run the giant estates and are now selling off bits and pieces, making ancestral estate homes into hotels, museums or leasing them as schools if not outright selling them.

The crime at the center of the story is somewhat interesting but not as riveting or sinister as in some other of the Brody novels. Still I recommend this book, especially if you are a Jackson Brody enthusiast.

I have read and adored everything KA has written until now-

Disjointed, meandering, cast of a thousand characters, burdened by detail upon detail of little if any significance let alone interest-
The entire book was crazy making

I wish I had not read it

Good mystery, funny

I really enjoyed the narrator, however, this may be a book best read as there are a lot of characters and each has a long backstory.

It was funny at times, a good mystery. However, in the end, some of the characters had nothing really to do with the story plot, but they took up hours of the book, so I wasn’t really sure what the point of that was. It seemed to drag on before you finally got to the good stuff. But in the end, it did make me want to try the rest of her Brodie books.

A Different Kind of Brodie Book

I was disappointed by this book. Lots of zany "cozy mystery" rabbit holes. Reggie has a major storyline, Jackson does not. . Louise only makes the briefest appearance. In other words, not enough of the characters I really wanted to see. Lots of silliness about the British upper crust of quasi-artstocracy and a faithless Anglican Church vicar, among other forgettable characters. There was a twisty resolution.
The narration, by Jason Isaacs, was wonderful.
