About this listen
Knives Out and Clue meet Agatha Christie and The Thursday Murder Club in this “utterly original” (Jane Harper), “not to be missed” (Karin Slaughter), fiendishly clever blend of classic and modern murder mystery.
“A witty twist on classic whodunits… Stevenson not only 'plays fair,' he plays the mystery game very, very well.”—Maureen Corrigan, Washington Post
Everyone in my family has killed someone. Some of us, the high achievers, have killed more than once. I’m not trying to be dramatic, but it is the truth. Some of us are good, others are bad, and some just unfortunate.
I’m Ernest Cunningham. Call me Ern or Ernie. I wish I’d killed whoever decided our family reunion should be at a ski resort, but it’s a little more complicated than that.
Have I killed someone? Yes. I have.
Who was it?
Let’s get started.
EVERYONE IN MY FAMILY HAS KILLED SOMEONE
My brother
My stepsister
My wife
My father
My mother
My sister-in-law
My uncle

Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate.

Story
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Rape and revenge are just the tip of the iceberg in a twisty tale that brings Detroit's denizens to life - and occasional death - in all their seedy glory. Electrifying, explosive, and unexpected, this is Elmore Leonard at his suspenseful best.

From a simple glance, I know your hobbies, what you ate for breakfast, how well you slept, and whether or not your wife is secretly seeing the high school biology teacher when you're not around. I can't explain how or why I get these feelings, only that I know they're true. All the little secrets you're too afraid to tell. Sometimes, that means helping people. Other times, it means staring down the barrel of a loaded gun. I wish I could tell you I was using this ability for good.

Just Okay
With all the great reviews of a fun story and good humor, I was really looking forward to this book. I found little to no humor, a long-winded story, and in general, felt disappointed. It was ok but I won't be seeking any further books from this author.

The story is brilliant.
Loved this story! An atypical typical murder mystery. Did not love the narration unfortunately. This one would be better to read vs listen but highly recommend.

Cunning story, great audio narration, thoroughly enjoyed
The title hooked me and I was not disappointed. There is a surprise, a twist, an unfolding, in every chapter, and each one is fascinating. I also appreciated that despite the fair number of characters, it took no effort to recall and follow each, as I find sometime happens in listening to audiobooks. But this author knew his format and wrote well for the audiobook genre. I appreciated the reader’s accent and enjoyed the Australian setting. (I want to know whether my friend in Melbourne knows about this author!). My next audiobook purchase will be Benjamin Stevenson. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook.

Witty, creative, and captivating. This was entertaining in a weirdly fun way. Not overly violent or smutty, which I appreciate.
