About this listen

The chilling tome that launched an entire genre of books about the often gruesome but always tragic ways people have died in our national parks, this updated edition of the classic includes calamities in Yellowstone from the past sixteen years, including the infamous grizzly bear attacks in the summer of 2011 as well as a fatal hot springs accident in 2000. In these accounts, written with sensitivity as cautionary tales about what to do and what not to do in one of our wildest national parks, Whittlesey recounts deaths ranging from tragedy to folly—from being caught in a freak avalanche to the goring of a photographer who just got a little too close to a bison. Armchair travelers and park visitors alike will be fascinated by this important book detailing the dangers awaiting in our first national park.

Sometimes sounded like a litany rather than a story but very well written nonetheless - enjoyed it

Great lessons in human behaviors

I like books like this that give an insight in what goes on in National Parks and humans limitations.
This said, what bugged me was the fact when an outsider, as for example a tourist died in the park is was them being ignorant or stupid or not having common sense according to the author. However, if a park ranger or park employee died in Yellowstone it was due to weather or being a freak accident. So very one sided. In the end they all lacked common sense. Employees or not.
No matter how people died in the end, it is sad but much can be learned from each one.

Excellent!

Great stories and narration was very well done. I’ll be recommending this to friends. I have the print version at home but enjoyed this in the car on a road trip.

Disappointing

I read a book entitled, “Death in Big Bend” by Laurence Parent. That book was engaging, factual, and the individual stories of death in Big Bend were artfully interwoven to create a coherent book. This book on “Death in Yellowstone” lacked all of these attributes & was dull. It was written more like the obituary section of a newspaper.
