About this listen

"No Way Down is both a gripping read and a clear-eyed investigation of the hubris, politics, and bad luck that brought on one of the worst disasters in modern mountaineering history."—Michael Kodas, author of High Crimes: The Fate of Everest in an Age of Greed

"Graham Bowley's No Way Down does a great job of putting you on the mountain. It is a refreshingly unadorned account of the true brutality of climbing K2, where heroes emerge and egos are stripped down, and the only thing achieving immortality is the cold ruthless mountain."—Norman Ollestad, author of Crazy for the Storm

In the tradition of Into Thin Air and Touching the Void, No Way Down by New York Times reporter Graham Bowley is the harrowing account of the worst mountain climbing disaster on K2, second to Everest in height . . . but second to no peak in terms of danger. From tragic deaths to unbelievable stories of heroism and survival, No Way Down is an amazing feat of storytelling and adventure writing, and, in the words of explorer and author Sir Ranulph Fiennes, "the closest you can come to being on the summit of K2 on that fateful day."

Why and yet maybe I know why

A true story. More of a documentary , researched, but still with its mystery. Valor, courage, bad luck or maybe a bad risk? The narrator was perfect, the facts , where known, are there for all to read and hear, but the courage of the Sherpas and Haps and the daring of the mountaineers is indisputable. True Olympians, all.

Extraordinary story and storytelling

Beautiful, fascinating, harrowing yet triumphant book. I listened to in Brooklyn,NY but I felt transported into the cold slopes of K2 with this great narration and excellent storytelling. The author does an exquisite job of introducing and developing many complex characters and describing the events as they unfolded. Highly recommended read. As a mountain and adventure lover I will be coming back to it.

Gripping narrative

Good pace, great job in telling the story through diverse strong characters. There are accounts as there are climbers who present their own biases. The author managed to capture the majority of their opinions.

Love these truly amazing stories!

The courage and tenacity of these mountaineers boggle my mind! I am in awe of their fearlessness. An armchair adventurer myself I love reading about their experiences and journeys. That’s the magic of books. You can be anywhere your mind takes you. I’m sorry and sad for their losses and then happy when they celebrate their achievements.

A most amazing book on K2

The writer captured the emotions, the joy and tragedy of the disparate climbers. The performance was elegant and his diction of the various names and his respect

Impactful telling of a tragedy

The narration is excellent. I have read dozens of mountain climbing misadventures and this retelling of a famous K2 tragedy is thoughtfully done w literary grace. The analysis of people’s motives for climbing is done with a measured hand. One of the best mountaineer books I have read.
