About this listen

A hot historical romance from USA TODAY best-selling romance author Jess Michaels....

Josie Westfall spent a lifetime feeling alone and bullied and an unfortunate incident involving her best friend's brother, Evan, only made things worse. Still, when she and her mother are invited to the wedding he will be attending, they can't exactly refuse. She hopes to avoid him, but instead they are thrown together and she is shocked to find that she actually begins to like the man she's thought of as an enemy for years.

Evan has always felt terrible about what he said to Josie years before, but he's never quite been able to make it up to her. When he tries, he discovers Josie may have a few secrets and some information about his missing sister. Now he must decide, should he betray her by trading on the unexpected attraction between them and discover what she knows? Or could the possibility of love be worth more than anything else?

Sensuality level: Hot and steamy

This book can be heard as a stand-alone novel but is part of a series (The Wicked Woodleys).

Didn't capture me

The dialogue was corny and the narrator was melodramatic. Maybe if it was a different narrator the dialogue wouldn't seem so corny. The plot was pretty shallow, no great intrigue...just a woman with low self-esteem and the Hero who tells her she's beautiful.

never enough!!!

I cant get enough of this wonderfully written collection of books. sometimes it is one, some times many family members of elite aristocrats that secretly spy for the crown, but whatever the number you can be sure family and friends get involved and romance and honor always win out! And the true winners of course are alw as us the ones that find that forever true love in the end.

pathetic puppy's pity party

Would you try another book from Jess Michaels and/or Danielle O'Farrell?

I really love Jess Michaels, but was disappointed. The narrator can only read what's written so she is not to blame. here.
The author treated the interaction of the H/H like a clinical lesson in sex. This could have been a text book as it lacked any real emotion.

What three words best describe Danielle O'Farrell’s performance?

okay, simpering, weak

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Deceived?

The heroine was TSTL, so all the scenes with her..but it would not make for a story. The sex scenes were so contrived and lacked any real feeling they left me cold. JM usually writes great sex scenes, but this time she failed to build the relationship between the H/H so the scenes were devoid of passion.

Any additional comments?

There was no development between the H/H. the heroine hated the hero for 15 years. After meeting again, and with little interaction, she is flat on her back with legs spread in a meadow, allowing the hero to "give her pleasure". I could not understand what was happening. Then it was just a series of sex scenes, but I could not care about ether of them. I turned off at the 3 hour mark. I was so disappointed , because I am a huge Jess Michaels fan. She usually writes such strong heroines, but this was just a throw-away book. Maybe she has just run out of ideas. This heroine was a loser that was filled with angst and self-pity in most moments and then suddenly was a doormat of a sex partner the next. It reminds me of modern girls that have self esteem issues and feel that performing sex will make them popular and feel valuable. This is the wrong message to send. I would have preferred the heroine gaining her strength and then the sexual happiness with the hero. The hero knows the heroine has low self image and uses that to have sex. He is not the kind of man I can respect.
