Story
Thomas Covenant is a leper, a bitter and solitary pariah who is mystically transported to another Earth where time moves differently than ours, one in which magic takes many forms. The Land is threatened by many evils, the most immediate of which is a maddened Cavewight whose subterranean excavations have unearthed the ancient and puissant Staff of Law. More dangerous to the free people of the Land is the Gray Slayer, Lord Foul, the Despiser, who intends to destroy the actual foundations of the Earth that he might wage war against the universe’s creator.

Now, after years of corruption and decadence, Elric’s amoral cousin Prince Yyrkoon, the brother of his beloved Cymoril, sets his eyes on the Ruby Throne. There he was in his sailboat in the middle of the Atlantic, all alone and loving it. Well, there was a US Navy carrier group on his southern horizon, but he was a Navy guy himself, so he didn't mind. Then came the UFOs, hurtling in from the Outer Black to overfly the carriers at Mach 17. Their impossible aerobatics were bad enough—but then they started shooting at each other, and at the Navy, with nukes. Little ones at first, but winding up with a 500 megatonner at 90 miles that fried every piece of electronics within line-of-sight.

Pretty Good
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
It's a great story, but it was more enjoyable for me when I was a kid and teens will likely enjoy it. I guess we change a bit in our tastes—who knew? Still, Kurtz earned her stripes and deserves credit for producing some classic storytelling at a time when YA was in its infancy.
I listened to the audiobook intermittently, switching back and forth between audio (when driving) and the paperback. Jeff Woodman does a great job with the pace and the character voices, and I highly recommend it.
Good read

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
Another problem for me was the narration. For some reason, the voice Woodman chooses for Morgan sounds to me just like Richard Burton in Becket. I kept expecting to hear Morgan come out with "We judge him damned with the devil and his fallen angels and all the reprobate, to eternal fire and everlasting pain!" and throw a candle on the floor. Now, I love Becket, and I love Richard Burton's acting, but it set the wrong tone for Morgan. It makes him sound an insufferable, pompous prig.
While I'm not totally happy with this book, I'm glad that Audible has released this series. I'm hoping that they will carry on with the Camber series, so I can see whether I'm equally deluded about the quality of that series.

I like this series, the plot is well thought out and paced appropriately. The mixing of magic and the clergy was well done. I would recommend to anyone interested in fantasy that like medieval settings and it just a little tired of the same bad guys (orcs, goblins ect). Nice to see a human protagonist.Great book, interesting twist on medieval kingdoms
