Richard Gale, a college football star, travels to Mexico to prove himself after failing in every business opportunity that his wealthy father had handed him. When he arrives at an Arizona border town, a chance meeting with an old friend launches him into an adventure to save a young Spanish beauty from a ruthless Mexican bandit.

Indominable Human Spirit

This is a great story but the narrator was lousy. He rushed through it.
The way he tried to speak in different voices for the various characters was horrible.

Excellent story but a miserable reading

The story begins focusing on two prospectors wandering throughout the desert, as prospectors are want to do. One, desiring to forget a woman. The other, wanting to remember a woman. As it turns out, the woman is the same for both men; Nell Warren. Moving on, we’re relocated to Forlorn River in Arizona. Belding (Beldy) is a U.S. Border and Immigration Ranger, who offered jobs to drifters Richard (Dick) Gale, Ladd (Laddy), and Jim. The Rangers are to prevent Japanese and Chinese immigrants from crossing the border, illegally entering the United States. Gale soon falls in love with Nell, Belding’s stepdaughter. Besides monitoring the immigrants, Mexican outlaws led by General Rohas are busily raiding tows and encampments throughout the two-state area. Rohas also searches for a beautiful, young Mexican woman named Mercedes who has escaped his clutches and disappeared. The story is a somewhat long-winded account of the Rangers versus the Mexican raiders, the persistent courting of Nell by Gale, the persecution of Mercedes, and the mystical actions of an old Yaqi Indian. The most interesting and exciting part of the story was when the Yaqi led a party across the desert and lava beds with Rohas in close pursuit. It is a good story, although a bit overly long.

One persistent suitor!

This book was very slow to develop in develop into something that was somewhat interesting. Even when they had parts that should have been very good been very good action scenes they kind of skipped over them like they were not that important and didn't really tell any of the details of the gun fights or battles. I wish I had not wasted my 8 hours continually continually hoping to get to the good part because the good part really didn't come.

slow slow slow.... for zane grey
