About this listen

In 1985, Charles Ng and Leonard Lake were spotted shoplifting. Ng escaped, but Lake's capture led police to a concrete bunker in the Sierra Nevada foothills, where they discovered the grisly evidence of an orgy of sex crimes, torture, and murder that claimed at least 16 victims. Lake committed suicide: Ng fled to Canada, where he was tracked down and extradited to California. This 14-year, $10 million legal case was the costliest and longest criminal prosecution in California history.

Too much verbiage on the trial. Really didn't completely finish. I had hoped there would be more detail on the conduct of Lake and Ng and the murders, etc.

Struggled to finish

Totally fascinating story. Great true crime. But it sounds like it’s Leonard Lake narrating. Very deadpan.

Lol.

This book was difficult to listen to. It takes you for a walk through the gruesome, unconscionable acts of two notoriously evil men. It is a reminder that the outer garment of human existence rarely reveals the corruption and evil that lurks just below the surface. It's a reminder that we can never really be sure who to trust. We may think that we know our "friends" and "neighbors", but are we sure that we really know anyone? Anyone at all? This book may keep you up at night. And maybe, just maybe, it should!

A well written and detailed account of a series of horrific crimes. I will definitely look into other books from Dan Lasseter. The narration was excellent.

True crime must read

I’ve listened to 100 true crime audiobooks. This book actually made me cry, that’s rare. It’s such a horrific and heartbreaking story. So unnecessary these murders. It makes me SICK that Charles the rapist and murderer of men, women and babies is still alive on death row. California needs to look at cars like this and know he deserves death! These poor families who are left to deal with the deaths and even worse what happened to them. Not just death but torture in some cases. Very in depth book and the first time I ever heard of this story.

Kept me interested the entire time HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Boring and confusing. This book was like a movie that looks amazing from the trailer but to find out upon watching that some of those scenes were edited out of the movie. The premise is very interesting but I never felt they described anything in detail. Imagine reading a John Wayne Gacy book that doesn't describe the crawl space. Or a book on Ed Gein that glosses over what they found in his house and describes it as "he just had some horrible things in there". That's essentially what this book does. If you are a fan of disturbing true crime novels you will be disappointed. I had to will myself to finish it. Narrator is good though.

boring
