Publisher's summary

In 1985, Charles Ng and Leonard Lake were spotted shoplifting. Ng escaped, but Lake's capture led police to a concrete bunker in the Sierra Nevada foothills, where they discovered the grisly evidence of an orgy of sex crimes, torture, and murder that claimed at least 16 victims. Lake committed suicide: Ng fled to Canada, where he was tracked down and extradited to California. This 14-year, $10 million legal case was the costliest and longest criminal prosecution in California history.

Struggled to finish

Too much verbiage on the trial. Really didn't completely finish. I had hoped there would be more detail on the conduct of Lake and Ng and the murders, etc.

Lol.

Totally fascinating story. Great true crime. But it sounds like it’s Leonard Lake narrating. Very deadpan.

You CAN HAVE TOO MUCH DETAIL!

Oh come on. What is it with these authors who spend all of their time walking around like Columbo getting every single detail, no matter how unimportant and/or unentertaining. People like Violence, History, passion, or controversy. I dont care how many coats of paint are on a 1974 Skylark (Just an example.

I listen to books for entertainment. Cut your research short, wrap up this one and write another. ENTERTAIN ME!

A tough listen these guys were worse than I knew.

I thought I knew a lot about the lake-ng murders. Specifically, two "survivalist type" nutjobs kidnapped a bunch of women to make into slaves and then murdered them. Lake takes cyanide, ng flees to Calgary yada yada yada... death row.

Turns out there is a lot more to this story. Particularly just how strange these two were and just how many people they killed particularly how many men (which is unusual for serial killers who tend to be very focused on one sex).
I can't say I'm more enriched by knowing all the gory details of Lake's murder spree but then again I suppose one doesn't delve into true crime for uplifting messages.

The one critique I have of the book is far too much time spent on the minutiae of Ng's court case. Do we really need to know what outfit the DA wore on each day? That whole section of the book could do with some serious pruning. It made it a struggle to finish.
The narrator (Charles Constant) does an excellent job but he really, really needs to learn how to pronounce Saskatchewan.... it's not that hard. Has he never met a single Canadian?

An Extraordinary True Story About Two Ordinary Men

This book was difficult to listen to. It takes you for a walk through the gruesome, unconscionable acts of two notoriously evil men. It is a reminder that the outer garment of human existence rarely reveals the corruption and evil that lurks just below the surface. It's a reminder that we can never really be sure who to trust. We may think that we know our "friends" and "neighbors", but are we sure that we really know anyone? Anyone at all? This book may keep you up at night. And maybe, just maybe, it should!

True crime must read

A well written and detailed account of a series of horrific crimes. I will definitely look into other books from Dan Lasseter. The narration was excellent.

Kept me interested the entire time HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I’ve listened to 100 true crime audiobooks. This book actually made me cry, that’s rare. It’s such a horrific and heartbreaking story. So unnecessary these murders. It makes me SICK that Charles the rapist and murderer of men, women and babies is still alive on death row. California needs to look at cars like this and know he deserves death! These poor families who are left to deal with the deaths and even worse what happened to them. Not just death but torture in some cases. Very in depth book and the first time I ever heard of this story.
