About this listen

This program is read by the author.

The complete story of the victories and failures of millennial socialism, as told by the writer who witnessed it all firsthand.

Amber A’Lee Frost came to New York City as a working class activist in a punk band, arriving just before the start of Occupy Wall Street—the first major event in decades for a socialist movement that was nearly extinct at the turn of the century. She's been at the vanguard of radical politics ever since, as a writer, veteran member of the Democratic Socialists of America, and cohost of the wildly popular Chapo Trap House podcast. She has reported on millennial activism everywhere from the sunny streets of Havana, to the Labour Party’s unexpected victory in the UK, to small towns in her home state of Indiana.

Dirtbag is a much-anticipated debut from one of the greatest emerging writers in modern socialism. This memoir is more than Frost’s story; it is also the story of the only movement that has a chance to reshape our world. Both are chock-full of momentary triumphs, stupid decisions, new international friendships, and rivalries, struggle, joy, setbacks, and heartbreak. Both are related with magnetic prose, remarkable candor, and unflappable humor.

Throughout it all, Frost burned the candle at both ends. She kissed a man in the rain at a train stop after he sang her “The Internationale", and gave herself hangovers that left her begging for death. But all of the late nights, heated debates, and joyous camaraderie was set against the unmistakable sense that somehow, socialism was winning.

The lady Chapo is back! I missed her. This a bind up of her columns and opinion pieces with extra bits and new stuff. Lots of personal stories, some shrugging reflections on past disappointments.

I'm not gonna pretend objectivity here. I'm in the tank for the author and her projects. For some reason she continues to not live up to my hopes of galvanizing messianic leadership, probably cuz that's not her thing, but whatever. This was a good voice to have in my head while trying to not rant about the state of the world at work.

Amber Frost makes her unique life experience that incorporates spot on commentary on the societal issues at hand by having the listener/reader understand her perspective through her own personal experience. As unique as Ms. Frost’s perspective is, her commentary and reactions to the events described could not be more relatable and for the first time it felt like I have words to describe my own reactions to my own journey. By listening I know she would hate me for saying this. But we need more of her work because her ability is far too profound to not be heard by the masses. Sorry for asking you to do more work. Thank you this was a great experience.

Fantastic writing. Could not stop listening

Amber A'Lee Frost is tough but correct about many things. It's a memoir, but mostly political and cultural criticism.

Very sharp and funny

Funny book. Warning: if you're a worker, you likely will feel feels. I cried tears of joy. Down with identity reductionism, Dean Spade-ism, anarchism. Up with dialectical historical materialism, democratic centralism, class struggle, and the increasing confidence of the international working class. Join DSA?

Really a fun read with a purpose, teaming with sexual energy. A bit overwrought at times but that is forgivable.

Such a Horny Book

Sharp. Witty. Irreverent… let’s see what other cliches can I find? Thoroughly enjoyed this personal chronicle of the Wild Ride of the Bernie Campaigns. Mate we remember the successful strategies and forget the stings of defeats.

Worth a read

A comedic, heartfelt collection of introspective essays. I really enjoyed this book from the feminine Chapo.

really good

Absolutely devoured this book. I am not super familiar with Amber as she left the podcast by the time I really started listening but occasional appearances gave me the impression of a woman of ferocious faith. She once claimed she would not hesitate as a suicide bomber while the other. The probable daydream popped up again here. Before I read it I hoped as I do with many of these socialist figures that she takes care of herself. These people likely have more in store for their lives than they realize. After though I'm more concerned for her own sake than the movements. Her honesty was charming.

Witty and accessible

A gonzo-journalist look at the millennial socialist movements. Amber is a gifted writer that lifts you out from your usual seat next to the Chapo Crew and in to her vomit splattered shoes. A must read or listen for anyone interested in socialism or political humor.
