About this listen
The Book of Genesis is a fascinating account of ancient Israel's earliest traditions regarding both its origins as a people and the origins of the natural and human world it experienced. In the eight-part series Discovering Genesis, the late David Neiman, professor of Jewish theology at Boston College, expertly guides you through the book's first chapters - from the story of creation to the Tower of Babel - to examine how the Biblical writers grappled with the fundamental questions and mysteries of the shared human experience: Where do we come from? Who are we? What makes us different? How did civilization come about? Why do we die?
Drawing on recent findings in Biblical studies, ancient history and archaeology, Dr. Neiman also reveals the cultural, historical and linguistic context in which the stories of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, and Noah and the Flood were originally written and understood. In the final lectures of this series, Dr. Neiman examines the life of Abraham the Patriarch and places his story into a political and historical context.

Story
Whether taken as a book of faith or a cultural artifact, the New Testament is among the most significant writings the world has ever known, its web of meaning relied upon by virtually every major writer in the last 2,000 years. Yet the New Testament is not only one of Western civilization’s most believed books, but also one of its most widely disputed, often maligned, and least clearly understood, with a vast number of people unaware of how it was written and transmitted.

Story
Written for those who were bewildered by the conflict between religion and scientific and philosophic ideas, The Guide for the Perplexed is concerned with finding a concord between the text of the Old Testament and its commentaries, and Aristotelian philosophy. After analyzing the ideas of the Old Testament, Maimonides examines other reconciliations of religion and philosophy like the Moslem rationalists and then offers his own resolution with Aristotelianism.

If you could sum up Discovering Genesis in three words, what would they be?
Illuminating, exhilarating, insightfulWhat did you like best about this story?
Dr. Neiman makes sense of many things in the Old Testament that I had glossed over as being of little meaning to us today. He makes many connections with evidence from other traditions and from archaeology that I had only known as dry facts.Have you listened to any of David Neiman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, he is a wonderful lecturer. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I could hardly put it down.Any additional comments?
Dr.Neiman was one of those scholars of the old school who make me regret not having the qualities necessary to become one. With a vast store of knowledge in their minds, they are able to draw together divers elements into a rich and dense web of understanding. To partake of such understanding is both enlightening and exhilarating. I am truly grateful that Dr.Neiman's lectures are available now as audiobooks; they are among those things that make me happy to be alive today.Wonderfully illuminating and stimulating
