About this listen

The Prescot family were miners. At one time, they were contracted to develop technology for a mineral-rich but uninhabitable system. Gradually, all the investors shied away. Then the Prescots broke through with the technology needed to exploit entire planets, and incidentally develop domed playgrounds for the perversely rich, including indoor ski slopes and cable cars over megavolcanos, casinos and rides. This created the economic problem of being the richest people in the universe, having more money than most governments and effectively unlimited resources. Money is a small blessing when enemies are quite willing to spend billions for the chance at trillions. Bryan Prescot and his daughter might as well have targets painted on their backs for the thugs, kidnappers, and assassins their competitors would throw at them. Bodyguards were necessary - Highly trained bodyguards who could be bought once and be utterly loyal no matter the circumstances. The altercation comes to a head inside the domes and mines of Govannon, with their enemy desperate to do anything to save their own lives, now that the gloves are off. Caron Prescot has only six bodyguards against an army, but she has two aces in the hole: The miners are on her side, and Elke, Ripple Creek's psychotic demolition expert, has a nuke. The problem with Elke having a nuke is that Elke will use it.

Mike does it again.

The first novel I ever read was The Weapon, book two in the freehold series. My father told me that though he knows I'm not an avid reader I'd very much enjoy the storytelling and world the author created. I hesitantly started reading expecting to prove him wrong. I read The Weapon three times start to finish. Years later I was perusing Audible and saw the first book in the Freehold series. Without hesitation I bought it and started listening. The Freehold series is the kind of sci fi that you get so enveloped in, that the story doesn't get lost in the fantastical additions to create far fetched science fiction stories. I just finished Do Unto Others and Rogue should be downloaded by now. I'm gonna have to cut the review short so can start on that. In conclusion Michael Z Williamson has made an awesome series well worth binging for any sci fi fan.

Love this author, but

The narrator had a monotonic delivery and never paused a moment between scene changes. this made the book difficult to enjoy. First half was better than the second; I found the whole long escape and battle section boring. Perhaps a reader with military experience would have enjoyed it more. Also, it might have been better had I read the book myself on Kindle rather than listening to this narration.

Great Story.,,Meh narration.

I Love the Ripple Creek series,it is great fun to read. However, I just could not adjust to Miss Elstons narrative style and choices. I will probably avoid her from now on.
