About this listen

New ER doctor Alexi Sur always intended to join an aid agency. She'd just expected to work among humans.

When the Pax Galactica Corps becomes her only option (don't ask—the debts aren't hers, but the family is, much to her regret), Alexi finds herself traveling the galaxy and learning alien physiology and culture, all while becoming a reality TV star.

Being pursued by camera drones and starring in her very own Welcome-to-the-Universe documentary was never on Alexi's to-do list. She's positive the show will flop. After all, Alexi is boring. That's why her boyfriend left her for her stepsister.

But as trillions of aliens tune in to watch Alexi discover the universe in Doctor Galaxy, what she discovers is the existential threat facing humanity.

Major Soren Agha already knows about the danger. He's currently playing peacekeeper for the Eripi of the Pariah Sector, whose tragic fate could be humanity's: conquered, exploited, lost.

Can one dedicated doctor save humanity? Can she, as Soren believes, also save the Eripi? And would anyone really notice if she sabotaged a couple of pesky camera drones?

Doctor Galaxy is a medical romantic comedy and a space opera. Reality TV has never been so alien!

Enjoyed this take on Alien Contact

A lighthearted romance mixed with some self-growth and “what-if” earth met alien civilizations. Enjoyed it and listened to it in one day. Definitely recommend

Great Writing, Annoying Characters

I am a huge, new fan of Jenny Schwartz. I've recently read 20 of her books back to back and very much enjoyed them. Then I came to Doctor Galaxy and realized I'd read it before. I couldn't remember why I hadn't been reading this author for years. There are exceptions to every rule. Rule: Books by Jenny Schwartz are awesome. Exception: Doctor Galaxy.

There is a lot of potential here but the primary issue is the maim character is weak willed, book smart but otherwise kinda dumb, and annoying. Admittedly, I am biased. My preference is strong female characters. Those who aren't necessarily perfect but have an inner strength, belief in themselves and the skills they do have and the willingness to fight for what they believe in. Alexi failed to deliver on these preferences. As a result when I initially read Doctor Galaxy I declined reading anything else by this author. I'm glad I was reintroduced via a different series and discovered their incredible talent.

This is my long winded way of saying, if you're reading this review to see if you should read this book, don't if it's your first by this author. Find one of their other series. The House series is one I would highly recommend. After you've experienced their better works come ba k to this one.

Why bother coming back to this one? Because the author is incredibly talented and the Pax Galactica world is interesting and complex. There are lessons in this story that shine through regardless of the irritating and ineffective main character and the attractive and smart but flat male interest.

A favorite ‘cozy’ sci-fi

A fun, character-driven sci-fi with a touch of romance and room for deeper thought, I truly enjoy this story.

The narrators chosen voices (and cadence) can be difficult to listen, but generally I appreciate her narration.

Fun SF romance

I really liked the world building, and I liked the FMC and the MMC. The narration is well done.

Convoluted

I’m a fan of Ms. Schwartz’ writings, but this one is just a little too convoluted politically for me and my poor pea brain. It was a struggle to keep track of it for me. Ms. Brentan was awesome however.

I expected more

I expected more from the doctor. But she didn't seem to grow much of a back bone. Maybe in the next books she will, fingers crossed.
