About this listen

A unique anthology of time-tested shudder-stories about a unique breed of women who "refused to take death lying down" - and it is now available in audiobook format.

Though they may all be siblings beneath the skin (and graveyard as well!), these vampiric sisters are as different as any eight women could be. One, "The Good Lady Ducayne", prefers to acquire her nourishment through more scientific means. Another doesn't even drink blood at all; her approach to draining the life from her victims is somewhat more direct (but we think you'll agree that "Luella Miller" deserves the appellation "vampire" every bit as much as any of the rest). Some inhabit ancient European castles with bloodlines that stretch back into history ("Clarimonde"); others (like "Mrs. Amworth") are freshly minted, dwelling in the house right across the street. Some are reached by automobile ("The Dark Castle"); others lie far back in time in the late 1700s ("Wake Not the Dead"). Some joined the legions of the undead via the standard methods, like suicide ("The Blood Is the Life"), while still others owe their existence to very unusual means indeed ("Placide's Wife"). Some even embraced their fate for love ("Each Man Kills"). There is one thing these frightful female fiends have in common, however, besides their fangs: Once you've met them, you will never forget them!

Vampire Women

I am a longtime lover of the vampire novel, starting at a young age when I read "Dracula". I am always looking for good books/stories about my favorite bloodsuckers and this collection is well worth reading.

You won't find any sparkly vamps in this bunch, but instead more of the classic ones that I remember from old Dracula movies. You can truly see how the term "vamp" came about when you meet these women. These are unique tales of beautiful women who lure unsuspecting men into loving them (and feeding their insatiable hunger). Some of the tales are set in Eastern Europe in old castles, but you also have one set in the Bayous of Louisiana. There is a hint of the werewolf in some of them, which is a refreshing take on an old story.

The narrator did a wonderful job and really added a lot to my enjoyment of the book. She had just the right accents and voices for each of the characters. The only complaint I had was in the story "Placide's Wife" with the pronunciation of "gris gris". This would not bother most readers, but anybody who has spent time in Louisiana will groan every time with her pronunciation. If you enjoy vampire novels and stories, give this anthology a try. Even though some of these were written many years ago, they are still wildly enjoyable.

I was given the opportunity to listen to this great collection by the publisher and chose to review it.

Classic short stories.

When I started this book I had no idea what to expect. What a pleasant surprise! This book is a collection of short stories that are written and performed like true classics. Unique characters, great stories and like nothing you have read before. I would highly recommend the title. Enjoy.

Interesting take on female vampires

I enjoyed the different styles and unique tales of each story. The narration was fitting for this genre and held my attention. If you're looking for something new, other than stories of Dracula, I recommend this one. A twist of blood thirsty females ready for their next unsuspecting victim.

Wish I could give 6 stars for the narrator

I recently read and and discussed Carmilla in my book club, which is a vampire story that predates Dracula by decades. I think it was just the right primer to jump into this anthology.

There are individual stories to be praised in here, but the real star in my opinion is Whitton Frank. Not content to merely narrate, Whitton performs where needed, seamlessly transitioning from comfortable, clear, and warm as a narrator to an expert performer giving life and unique voices all throughout. Doing this with a novel is difficult enough, but to be consistent with this sort of quality across multiple stories bu various authors is a treat and more than makes this audiobook worth the price of admission.

5 stars all around!

Delicious with Blood

Wake not the dead! Dracula’s consorts and daughters were blood thirsty. They left the males drained and spent. This is a story of several classics of eight vampire women. Once you have met them, you will never forget them. The narrator was fantastic portraying the characters.
