About this listen

A wonderful story of adventure through the different spheres of life by Scottish author George MacDonald.

Listeners will fall in love with this "Christ-like" character, Gibbie, who is a mute, yet truly good in heart and in deed. A uniquely creative tale that will capture both the old and the young for ages to come.

Though a fiction book, it has the potential of expressing life lessons in a most enjoyable way.

May you be blessed as you travel with Sir Gibbie in this tale!

Gordon Jack did an amazing job on bringing this story to life!

A narrator can make or break a story. Gordon Jack sweeps you up and carries you right into Scotland and the life of Sir Gibbie.

As always, George MacDonald intricately weaves this story and brings out deep compassion and thoughtfulness in his readers, showing what it means to love and care for others more than oneself. He sketches out a picture of the heart of God and what it looks like to know Him personally.

George MacDonald is the Best

I’ve been waiting for a George MacDonald book to come to Audible - one for adults, that is- and have enjoyed this so much. I’ve read everything of his in younger days and wanted to have them to listen to.

For those not familiar with MacDonald, he’s a Christian writer from a different generation and his stories are both entertaining and filled with theology.

My only “beef” with this rendition is the reading of the scotch dialect/Gaelic. This narrator is great BUT the conversations in scotch are difficult to discern. When reading them in print I could go slowly, read and reread and get the understanding but in this case, there is lots of rewinding. I can’t help but wonder if that is one of the reasons his books have not been available previously. There has to be a solution- possibly slow down since this narrator blows through those conversations (like they probably were said). OR could there be a bit of mild translation? With that said, it is still a wonderful read/listen and I will purchase any more and all of his books for adults!

Beautiful Reading

The reader's performance is all I could have asked for: Personal, deep, charming, sensitive, understanding, and authentic. Highly recommended. :-)

Like literally the best

The eternal brilliance of George MacDonald is strong with this one. An inspiring tale of overcoming through love and self sacrifice, which highlights the utility of suffering and the futility of transient power, riches, or prestige.

But what puts this particular number above the average is the incredible voice performance by Mr. Jack. The beautiful Scotch pronunciation really breathes a new dimension of vivacity into this already legendary story.

Best of the best

I love all George MacDonald books. He was a great inspiration to C.S. Lewis. The narrator is amazing!

Good book

This is a very unusually intriguing book I enjoyed listening to. Sir Gibbie is a very interesting character in how he interacts with the people he encounters in his life. The author's running commentary is also very interesting. The galic dialect is hard to follow and I know missed a lot of meaning because of it. But I held on to the end and it gave me hope for my life too.

A Little Known Gem!

Enjoyed this story almost as much as I enjoyed the MAIDEN'S BEQUEST by the same author. A lovely story and full of incredible insights. The narrator couldn't have done a better job and I got great entertainment from the Highland Scotch. Definitely would listen to this one again!
