About this listen

A wonderful story of adventure through the different spheres of life by Scottish author George MacDonald.

Listeners will fall in love with this "Christ-like" character, Gibbie, who is a mute, yet truly good in heart and in deed. A uniquely creative tale that will capture both the old and the young for ages to come.

Though a fiction book, it has the potential of expressing life lessons in a most enjoyable way.

May you be blessed as you travel with Sir Gibbie in this tale!

Gordon Jack's narration brings one of my favorite books to life! I was specifically looking for an audiobook of Sir Gibbie read by a Scottish narrator who could render the Scots dialog naturally and authentically, and he did a brilliant job!

Sir Gibbie was the book where I first learned to read Scots years ago, with the help of a glossary. I see reviews where listeners had difficulty understanding it, but I'd encourage anyone who's hesitant to try this book because of that: just go for it! Even without catching every word, you can still understand most things and fully enjoy this lovely story. But the delightful Scots dialog is totally worth the effort of sometimes backing up to relisten to a sentence, or even of looking up words now and then. (Hint: there are good Scots dictionaries online).

For anyone wanting to actually learn Scots, this book is a great place to start! Read along with the audio to better learn new words, and keep that dictionary handy!

Beloved story, delightful narration!

This is the first time I have listened to Sir Gibbie. It was so excellently performed. Speaking in the Scottish dialect made the story come to life. There were times they had to repeatedly listen to a section in order to understand it, and often resorted to online sources to help decipher phrases that were completely unintelligible to me. I now understand why this is Such a loved story. Youngster Gibby catches your heart and presents amazing strength of character and the soul in a way not often depicted.

Excellent narrator

A narrator can make or break a story. Gordon Jack sweeps you up and carries you right into Scotland and the life of Sir Gibbie.

As always, George MacDonald intricately weaves this story and brings out deep compassion and thoughtfulness in his readers, showing what it means to love and care for others more than oneself. He sketches out a picture of the heart of God and what it looks like to know Him personally.

Gordon Jack did an amazing job on bringing this story to life!

Wonderful

I’ve been waiting for a George MacDonald book to come to Audible - one for adults, that is- and have enjoyed this so much. I’ve read everything of his in younger days and wanted to have them to listen to.

For those not familiar with MacDonald, he’s a Christian writer from a different generation and his stories are both entertaining and filled with theology.

My only “beef” with this rendition is the reading of the scotch dialect/Gaelic. This narrator is great BUT the conversations in scotch are difficult to discern. When reading them in print I could go slowly, read and reread and get the understanding but in this case, there is lots of rewinding. I can’t help but wonder if that is one of the reasons his books have not been available previously. There has to be a solution- possibly slow down since this narrator blows through those conversations (like they probably were said). OR could there be a bit of mild translation? With that said, it is still a wonderful read/listen and I will purchase any more and all of his books for adults!

Please add more!

George MacDonald is the Best

The reader's performance is all I could have asked for: Personal, deep, charming, sensitive, understanding, and authentic. Highly recommended. :-)

Beautiful Reading

The eternal brilliance of George MacDonald is strong with this one. An inspiring tale of overcoming through love and self sacrifice, which highlights the utility of suffering and the futility of transient power, riches, or prestige.

But what puts this particular number above the average is the incredible voice performance by Mr. Jack. The beautiful Scotch pronunciation really breathes a new dimension of vivacity into this already legendary story.

Like literally the best
