Great Story...but not a great narrator

Sarah KL Wilson is a very imaginative writer. Her grasp of dragons is quite good. I look forward to seeing how this adventure continues.

Sorry to say though, I really struggled with Sean Rhead's narration. The room he is recording in sounds very echoey and his tone is..well...flat. There are times when a question is being asked and he makes it sound like a statement. At other times, the narration calls for more exciting emotion and storytelling, but he is quite monotonous.

Another promising series...

Tor, a teenager living on the streets after watching his city nearly burn to the ground during the war, is recruited by Hubric to be part of a spy ring to find information for the new Dominar. Not exactly what Tor had expected of the promises made months earlier of becoming a dragon rider,, but the Magika are on the move... Tor has his doubts of becoming a dragon rider after experiencing the thrill and terror of riding with Hubric, but ends up with a dragon of his own: Saboraak, the first female dragon bonded to a human. Tor and Hubric are twice kept from reaching supplies, and find that the young girl Zara, Hubric's other spy in the making, has been captured, and it is up to Tor and Saboraak to rescue her while Hubric reports back to the Dominar. This book continues the story started in the Dragon School series, but with new characters in the lead, and as many (or more) twists and turns as the Dragon School series.

A fantastic read!

It takes a special kind of magic to hide in plain sight.

I was so excited for the next season of Dragon School and I couldn't be more pleased as to how this book turned out!

I loved everything about it - the characters, the dragons. Just everything.

So excited to be back reading more stories from this world!

Perfect for readers of fantasy reads.

The narrator was good. Lovely listen.

Adventure, Danger And Intrigue

Sean Rhead gives a great narration of the story with great voices and bring the book to life. I enjoyed the characters as they grow and develop in the story. A lot of action makes a great storytelling and I was not disappointed at all.

This one falls in the good category for me

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This book is pretty good. I had a couple of complaints, but none that prevented me from finishing the book or enough to push me into disliking it. So, I enjoyed the dialog and the story. I think it was imaginative and fun, if a little short. My first complaint is on the audio quality. It is clear, but a little bit too much echo. Also, the narrator's female voices are a bit silly and the same. Overall, he is FAR from the worst I've ever heard, and I would still be willing to listen to another book he reads. All in all, I still considered this a good book and a positive listening experience.

Great dialogue

I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for my review. I love the dialogue between the main character and the dragon. I will definitely be checking out the rest of the series.

War is over, but there's still trouble to handle

Tor remembers riding on the back of Hubric's dragon when they saved Tor and people from the burning buildings in Tor's home of Vanika. It was a feeling he wants to have again, in the sky on a dragon. Hubric promised to return, and he finally has. But his vague words about where Tor will go and do has Tor wondering if he should leave his burnt out husk of a home town or not. But if there's a chance of flying a dragon... And not starving...

Sean Rhead is a new narrator for me, and I very much enjoyed his voice for Tor. As I got to know Tor through his actions, Sean voiced him with feeling. The story is clean and clear as we listen. I look forward to hearing more.

This is another series in a dragon world Sarah has created. I've listened to the first book in the Dragon School series. But I don't think you have to listen/read the Dragon School series to understand this series. Although, looking through the books available for Dragon School series, I believe it will tell of the war that's said to have ended in the beginning of this book.

Tor is in for more than he expected. Hubric figures with Tor's background and skills, he'd be perfect as his apprentice in the position he recently was placed in. Then we meet Saboraak. Saboraak is brought in to help with this new position. She is special too! She's the first female to join the Dominic and brings skills to the job that are needed. Female dragons can do something cool that males can not! You have to read or listen to find out.

Tor and Saboraak are a fun match. Well, match... They have strong personalities that clash a bit. The clash is a way that each tell the other what they need to hear, to make them stronger. They made me smile as they told the hard truths to each other. In this short story I grew fond of Tor and Saboraak together and as characters.

This story is the beginning of much more with Tor and Saboraak. We pick up a few potential allies and ready for what's to come. At the end, I wanted to story to keep going. I wanted to formally meet our new characters and learn what is going on with the Magica. I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for the next section.

Very short, clean, fantasy adventure

I am really enjoying this series. The narrator's deep voice for the main female character was a bit startling at first (it it deeper than the voice he uses for the main male character) but I got used to it. I love how through the whole story the hero constantly says "I'm no hero." It is a clean, lighthearted fantasy adventure. I think my teenager would also enjoy listening to this series. The books are around 2 hours each, and cliffhangers. There is no conclusion / closure to the plot until the end of the series, although a few minor sub plots have conclusion. Personally I would have preferred a single long book instead of a dozen mini books.

Needed some backstory

I enjoyed this audiobook overall, and I couldn't help liking the annoying, snarky anti-hero who is the main character. That said, I needed more backstory. The book just started out of nowhere, and I felt like I had missed the beginning. Once I accepted that I didn't know as much as I wanted about the character, his upbringing, or the background of the world he lived in, I enjoyed the story itself and the adventure. I certainly want to know how the story progresses from here. This relatively short book felt like a teaser, and I want more.

As for the narration, I felt the tone really suited the characters and their attitudes. Would a female voice had been better for female characters? Maybe. But short of having two narrators, I thought Mr. Rhead did a good job. The delivery was appropriately paced and his voice was clear. It was easy to distinguish between the various characters, too.
