About this listen

A young hero. A mighty dragon. Together, they must rise against evil…

Knowledge of the Dragon Tongue was buried ages ago. Without it, no human can be bound to a dragon, nor wield their magic against the sorcerous tyrant King Onyx.

Cora knows her grandmother's stories of the old dragon riders by heart. But to her, they’re nothing more than fairy tales…until she encounters a dragon and discovers, to their mutual shock, that the lessons her grandmother taught her actually allow them to understand one another. As her friendship with the dragon, Alaric, grows, a bond between them begins to form. Can she be the start of a new age of dragon riders?

But King Onyx refuses let his ancient enemies rise again. On their own, Cora and Alaric are no match for the powerful sorcerer. But when they discover a rebel movement rising up against the king, they find allies in the last places they would have expected—including in the palace itself, when the king’s ward, Octavia, is won over to their side.

As Cora and Alaric work together with their new comrades, they discover the dark depths of the enchantment binding their kingdom—and the horrifying lengths to which Onyx is willing to go in order to cling to power. The only way to free their home is to defeat King Onyx. But if they fail, more than just their lives will be forfeit. The nation itself could fall…

The Rise of the Dragon Riders: Books 1-3 boxset is an epic fantasy adventure where teenage dragon rider Cora and her dragon companion Alaric discover what it takes to free a kingdom! It includes the first three books in the Rise of the Dragon Rider series: Dragon Tongue, Dragon Scales, and Dragon Fire.

Dragons

I read this set before and also listened to one. I think its great to be able to read all in one sitting. That being said, follow the mystery, suspese, action, adventure, and more. You will not be disappointed with this series.

Great narrator for a great story

✨Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this audiobook in order for an honest review.✨

Full reviews are on each book in Goodreads.

Narrator Amy Hall really did such a great job! The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because she was sometimes robotic and, especially in the first book, there were some misplaced pauses and tones. Aside from that, I loved her. She did different character voices and didn’t go overboard with male voices. I felt the emotions from characters and she was easy to listen to. I would recommend checking out books that she’s narrated. :)

Author Ava Richardson wrote such a fun story! I really enjoyed it. As a whole, I don’t believe it was 5 stars. There were some weird stopping points and just a few other little things that I mentioned in my Goodreads reviews that made it just short of amazing. I love how she closed out the third book, and I actually am interested in where she brought the story with the remaining books. This was a solid plot and almost everything that I thought was a hole ended up being explained at one point or another. I think my biggest issue was the fact that everything was spelled out for the reader and there wasn’t a lot of surprise. While I enjoyed listening, there wasn’t that element that made me feel like I NEEDED to continue.

Overall, I would recommend others check these books out! ❣️

Great Boxed Set

This was a great boxed set containing the books 1-3 of Rise of the Dragon Riders series. The characters were endearing while the story lines were engaging and kept me coming back for more.

Amy Hall did a fantastic job of breathing life into these stories and made them as fun to listen to as they were to read.

Fantastic

Ava is my favorite author to read or listen to dragon stories. She never disappoints and this series is no different. Love the characters. A different twist to a dragon story. Highly recommend a very enjoyable listen.

The best story I’ve read in a while.

I loved the story, the descriptions of the magic, and the feelings of writing on Dragon back. And I really liked that awkward situations and bad decisions by the main character did not feel forced or unnecessary, they were all part of her ark. I love how much of a bad ass she is by the end. Overall amazing story!!!! I loved it, and it is definitely going on my favorites list. To the author, you did such a good job, your story came to life in my head, and I loved every second of it.

Complex, Well-Written Character-Driven Story

For whatever reason, I started with Book 2 and 3 in this series last summer and never went back to Book 1! So when this audiobook box set, including book one, became available, I knew I had to check it out! I'm glad I did. While I absolutely enjoyed the other two books without having read the first, I certainly understood the world, the characters, their motivations, etc., so much more by having that grounding in Book 1. The way Cora and Alaric came to be “dragon and his dragon rider” was amusing and sweet. Communicating and working as a team was certainly rocky at the beginning! Watching their bond slowly form, literally and figuratively, was another delight. When I first read the second two books, Alaric the dragon came across as stuffy and gruff, but having witnessed the very beginning of their relationship after listening to Book !, he didn't come across to me at all that way when I got to those books. So, I highly recommend you read or listen to this series in order from the beginning so you can fully appreciate the story and characters. As with all this author's books, this series has a lot of action, a hint of romance, and some moments that really tug at the heartstrings. I like how even secondary characters (and creatures!) in her books have growth arcs, like an old dragon rider who made terrible choices choosing redemption and sacrifice. I like how romance wasn't just for the young people! I especially appreciated the contrast between our two heroines, Cora and Princess Octavia. While they came from very different backgrounds, both are young women of strong character, brilliant minds (though in quite different ways), and incredible resilience. I love a strong heroine, and this book has two! While the narrator was mostly fine, providing different voices for all the different characters, she mispronounced a few words. It's one thing to mispronounce some of the funky names that can exist in books like this, but she mispronounced a simple English word repeatedly—each time like the proverbial nails on the chalkboard for me. the word she couldn't pronounce? Hearth. She pronounced it “HERth” instead of “HARth.” I don't quite get that. Despite this issue, I do recommend this box set and this series.

here is a bit from my full reviews of Books 2 & 3:

Book 2: Dragon Scales — Another Excellent Installment in Delightful Series

I love how the author creates young heroines who have no clue of their strength and abilities until situations make them come to realize them and build them not only for their own betterment or to suit their needs but also to improve their world and assist in the battles against particularly dark foes with evil intent for all in their realm. This book appears to start simply, with its heroine wanting to rescue her father and her dragon's mother from imprisonment. But she and her dragon are soon swept up in a much larger predicament impacting their world. Much of the book is about her and her dragon learning new skills so they can rescue their parents and also take on bold roles in wresting their world away from an evil ruler and his minions. I loved the side story about the presumptive heir to the throne and her growing relationship with the heroine’s dragon’s mother; I wish they got a little more screen time. The author has built a complex world of symbol- and emotion-focused magic with dragons. The evil is more complex than it appears at first. I love how the author drew this out until near the end of the book, creating a twist I didn’t see coming yet was understandable once you thought about what happened earlier. I love to be surprised, and this author has done it time and time again.

Book 3: Dragon Fire — Plotlines Merge; End of a Major Story Arc

After reading Book 3, this may be my favorite series by this author yet! Book 3 pulls together separate plot threads from prior books and finishes a long chapter in the overarching plot of the series’ story. In the previous books, we followed two heroines, one a young dragon rider—the first in many generations—and a princess who became disenchanted with her role as heir to a villainous king and became friends with an imprisoned dragon. In this book, their paths finally truly cross—though they had seen each other in passing in Book 1. We had watched their stories evolve independently of each other. The heroines are quite different but are strong women in their own right. The dragons are fantastic major characters as well, especially mother and son, the son the dragon for the first dragon rider in centuries and the mother the dragon of the princess. As always, I appreciate the plot’s twists and turns in this author's stories, and the battle at the end was epic with a capital E, as it should be in tales like this. The way magic works in this world and how the riders bond with their dragons—and what that means—are well thought out, making logical sense as each challenge arises and is faced. This book also has fledgling romances that add urgency and poignancy to the story, giving the characters even more to lose and more to inspire them to defeat the villain against horrendous odds.
