To most people, the definition above is just a word expressing similar definitions and nothing more. But when a bizarre sequence of events draws not only the United States but every world superpower on the globe into the threat of World War III, the word takes on a whole new meaning. The president is missing.... And all the world can do at this point is watch as the horror and mystery slowly begin to unravel, revealing the Unfathomable.

Other than the president, who has a very brief part, I didn’t really have a strong emotion toward any of the characters. I actually didn’t care for Dragon Man at all and was ok that he wasn’t really the star of the story. It was really the pieces of the plot and the style that this was written that really got me excited. All the little references speckled throughout really made me smile. Once I started this I couldn’t stop. I can fully understand that this style isn’t for everyone, but as someone who loves bad tv and cheesy scifi, this really hit on a lot of my favorite topics. Not saying this is a bad or cheesy story, just has some of pieces often found in those stories.
Thames has a very deep and gritty voice, like turn the bass down deep. Definitely has a familiar quality like it would be a voice you would come across on a commercial. He didn’t provide character voices, but I was completely fine with that. While I like good character voices his cadence and inflection for the characters was sufficient.

This was such a fun listen.

OK, so I decided to go ahead and give this book a try after feeling rather apathetic towards book 4. I'm more convinced with this book that DragonMan is just the "Universe" these books are set in and not really a central character to the general story contained in this book. The narrator for this book is a better choice as the setting and main character is an American. He has a gritty voice and did keep things interesting for me. I am inclined to agree with other reviewers that this is NOT a super hero story. More an X-Files/Fringe style one. That isn't a complaint, just an observation. I definitely liked this book far more than the last one. Still a bit underwhelmed, but I will admit to still being curious about the other books in the series. I wouldn't spend money on them at this point, but should they want more reviews, I'd certainly consider it.
Better than book 4

Late night monster movie, but in book form.

Another strange thing is that the publisher's summary hardly seems to fit the actual story at all.
I love scifi, I love superhero stories and I love the X-files. This story however, does not tick any of those boxes for me.
Narration was fine, I liked the deep voice of the narrator, although he does nothing to distinguish the voices of the different characters.

Not a superhero story

For the first half of the book, the story was great. Then the halfway point comes and it goes down the tube.
All the characters were one dimensional and flat. They also follow every trope that you would expect them to, from the overly emotional woman who can't decide between hating the main character and loving him, to the FBI agent who is arrogant to the point that I hated her as a character. Then we have the paranoid scientist who thinks that the government and aliens are out to get him.
Even DragonMan is forgettable. In fact the story could easily be written so he isn't even there and it would all turn out just fine. He's supposed to be the main character of the story, but the only impact he has on the story is showing up just in the nick of time to save the day before flying off so fast no one thinks they saw anything other than a blur.
