Publisher's summary
When the healer Snake was summoned, she traveled the blasted landscape with her three serpents. From the venom of two of them, she distilled her medicines. But most valued of all was the alien dreamsnake, whose bite could ease the fear and pain of death.
When the dreamsnake is killed, Snake's powers as a healer are all but lost. Her only hope of finding another dreamsnake lies in a treacherous journey to the far-off Center City, where Snake will be pursued by two implacable followers: one driven mad by love, the other by fear and need.

Story
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

Story
Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home/work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And, of course, the pirates want her dead, too.

This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Everyone dreams of marrying a prince - except for me. I am nothing more than a pawn in my adoptive mother's diabolical plot against the seven kingdoms. I was the chosen tool, her sharpened blade that would cut the deepest into the heart of the kingdom of Baist. But like all deadly weapons, my wedding is two-edged sword that could cost me my soul. For I am Rosalie, one of the adopted daughters of Lady Eville, and it is my duty to enter into a loveless and hate-filled marriage with the narcissistic Crown Prince of Baist.

You define life or it defines you. In Shawn Speakman’s case, it was both. Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011, Shawn quickly accrued a massive medical debt that he did not have the ability to pay. That’s when New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks offered to donate a short story that Shawn could sell to help alleviate those bills—and suggested he ask the same of his other writer friends. Unfettered is the result: An anthology built in order to relieve that debt, featuring short stories by some of the best fantasy writers in the genre.

Will there be more
I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the characters and glimpses of the world that they inhabited. I hope that there will be more stories set on this world. There is a lot of people variety from desert nomads to space ports and signs of a massive planet disaster. The civilizations that each developed are only glimpsed at. I hope that there will be more to come about this world.

Excellent story of a post apocalyptic world. Given when it was written, it was very forward thinking and presented an open minded view of humanity, even after nuclear war. Great characters, good adventure and a few twists and turns. :)

Loved it!
I sincerely hope there will be more books about Snake. One was not enough! Perfect read for magician adventure lovers. Snakes rule!

I liked it more than I thought I would.
I honestly only listened to this title because it is one of the few books to win both the Hugo and the Nebula awards. the synopsis sounded terrible, and I thought I was going to hate it. I actually really enjoyed it.

Fun, unknown classic
This is a fun story set in a post-apocalyptical time. The characters are engaging and interesting. There is a lot of "free love" in the book, which kind of upstages the really outstanding plot and dramatic idea, which involves alien snakes, long journeys and ultimate danger. The performer was quite good, but the sound quality was very strange. The narration was loud, but the dialogue was very quiet, which is really frustrating in a car. In the end, it's a good book, though.

Reading all the Hugo/Nebula Winners
Dreamsnake is 40 years old and succinctly manages to tell an an engaging story in a interesting and comprehensible setting, with explicable plot elements, and in a voice which is understandable and easily related to. With it's vivid settings and interesting characters, it is easy to see how this novel was selected for recognition with both the Hugo and Nebula awards. Having read a number of the more recent winners of these literary prizes, it is easy to see similarities to this work and its influences and wish that certain recent winners were as focused on the craft of story-telling.
