About this listen

"Narrator Emmett Grosland conjures the essence of a troubled soul in search of peace in this gentle audio."—AudioFile Magazine

In A Psalm for the Wild-Built, Hugo Award-winner Becky Chambers's delightful new Monk and Robot series gives us hope for the future.

It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend.

One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered.

But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

They're going to need to ask it a lot.

Becky Chambers's new series asks: in a world where people have what they want, does having more matter?

Featured Article: Audible Essentials—The Top 100 LGBTQIA+ Listens of All Time

While LGBTQIA+ creators have been around for millennia, it’s only recently that we’ve been hearing more diverse, more queer-authored, and more queer-performed stories about the entire spectrum of LGBTQIA+ experiences and identities. This list—just like the community it represents—is meant to be fluid. But most importantly, it’s meant to celebrate and reflect on the issues faced by LGBTQIA+ people everywhere.

Editor's Pick

Feel-good, feel all the feels sci-fi
I’m always excited for a new Becky Chambers title—but even more so for a brand-new series. Her distinct style of cozy sci-fi manages to somehow be at once heartwarming and thought-provoking—two things that are exactly what I need right now. Even with her nonhuman characters (here: robots!), her stories restore my hope in humanity. I’m extra thrilled to discover a new narrator in the process, as Emmett Grosland brings voice to an unlikely friendship between a robot and a tea monk. —Sam D., Audible Editor

What do humans need? This story took me on a journey inside my own heart. I am still sinking into the lovely feeling of what this story means to me personally.

Brilliant

This was quite different from most other books I have read. It was a gentle story, quiet and introspective, and very enjoyable! Robots have been living apart from humans for quite a while, and for a change they are not trying to annihilate humanity. In this first human-robot encounter for some time, they seemed to get along rather well!

A gentle, introspective and enjoyable book.

Sometimes we all need to be told it’s okay to just be, to just exist as we are.

A much needed reminder

...and it was a robot. really enjoyable story. this one isn't action filled and is more to inspire thought. reminds me of some star trek episodes where you meet a new species and learn all about their culture and history.

I have never related to a character so much...

"..you do know how resource heavy consciousness is right?"

I hope for more of these stories in my future.

This was literally wonderful, as in full of wonder. Wonder at the world as well as wonder at people both human and robot. It hits the good feelings in just the right way.

Chambers' other books have been large scale works. This is small and personal. Enjoyable but not as engrossing for me.

I enjoyed it but not as much as her other books.
