Erin Mallon
About this listen
The passions aroused by canine competition can inspire violent fantasies. But when a talented handler falls flat on her face during the obedience trials, Australian Shepherd lover Janet MacPhail can hardly believe someone would actually resort to murder.
As she takes care of her mother and falls for a hunky black Lab owner, the last thing Janet needs is to find out she's become a "person of interest." Nosing around for clues that might clear her good name, Janet and her friends - Australian Shepherd Jay, tabby cat Leo, and eccentric neighbor Goldie Sunshine - discover the hard way that killers don't like snoops. And it soon becomes apparent that the next victim might just be Janet herself.
©2012 Sheila Webster Boneham (P)2013 Audible, Inc.Editorial reviews
Drop Dead on Recall, the first book of Sheila Webster Boneham’s new Animals in Focus mystery series, is a fun, fast-paced murder mystery set in the surprisingly intrigue-filled world of competitive dog showing - a sure-fire win for any animal-loving mystery buffs out there!
Janet MacPhail, the main character of the work, is made eminently relatable by the performance of actor Erin Mallon, whose charming reading makes it easy to root for the heroine of this engaging audiobook. Mallon guides listeners deftly through Janet’s life, from the concerns of tending to her ailing mother, to a budding romance with a handsome dog handler, and right through to a murder case in which Janet may be a suspected killer...or even the next one killed.

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Story
Kidnappers grabbed Jenna in broad daylight, right in front of her children and their horrified classmates. Her family was issued an insane ransom demand: $25 million in cash and jewels, payable by the end of the school day, otherwise they’ll never see her again. As Jenna’s mother scrambles to gather the money, detectives Mo Butler and George Ortega follow the trail of the kidnappers, which will lead them through a sordid landscape of jealous lovers, broken dreamers, and twisted schemers. But every second counts, and there’s one thing Jenna Wade doesn’t have: very much time.

Story
The story is not your typical murder mystery. The sleuth is not a detective, private eye, or lawyer. He's an ordinary guy with an extraordinary dog. Jacob Martin is trying to make the best of a divorce and mid-life crisis when he gets a call at two o'clock Sunday morning from his mother. His sister has been arrested for the murder of her fourth husband, and his father is near death. Thus begins an adventure that takes Jake and his golden retriever from their Colorado retreat to a backwater town in the Missouri Ozarks.

Lilly may be losing a husband, but she's gaining a toy poodle. Ok story
This was an okay story. It was probably a little too long, a little too descriptive for me. I like my books to move a little faster. Just a preference. I am a dog lover. I did like the interaction between the main character and her dog. The mystery part was okay, again not very compelling of a mystery though.

A delightful surprise
I'm not an animal lover, and I had reservations about the animal aspect of this story. I'm happy I gave this book a chance. This was an interesting book with characters that I really enjoyed getting to know. The plot moved along at a nice pace and the mystery had several twist and turns. This is a very good way to spend a lazy day.

Dog Show Mystery
I usually adore novels involving dogs & their humans. However, Drop Dead on Recall was more about the dog show community, where animals are considered furry property rather than members of the family.
While I liked the main character Janet, I did not understand her involvement in dog training for the purpose of winning ribbons or prestige rather than safety or service reasons (search & rescue, military or police, etc.)
Just not my cup of tea but a well written mystery.

A welcome surprise.
Sheila Webster Boneham did a nice job of creating a wonderful story. Her characters were lovable and a wonderful surprise. The story was original. I felt like I had found some new friends. The story had a few twists and turns. Erin Mallon did a nice job of bringing the characters to life. I recommend this story to fans of cozy mysteries, and look forward to the next book in the series.
