About this listen

"Anne Lamott is my Oprah." (Chicago Tribune)

From the best-selling author of Help, Thanks, Wow comes an inspiring guide to restoring hope and joy in our lives.

In Dusk, Night, Dawn, Anne Lamott explores the tough questions that many of us grapple with. How can we recapture the confidence we once had as we stumble through the dark times that seem increasingly bleak? As bad news piles up - from climate crises to daily assaults on civility - how can we cope? Where, she asks, "do we start to get our world and joy and hope and our faith in life itself back...with our sore feet, hearing loss, stiff fingers, poor digestion, stunned minds, broken hearts?"

We begin, Lamott says, by accepting our flaws and embracing our humanity.

Drawing from her own experiences, Lamott shows us the intimate and human ways we can adopt to move through life’s dark places and toward the light of hope that still burns ahead for all of us.

As she does in Help, Thanks, Wow and her other best-selling books, Lamott explores the thorny issues of life and faith by breaking them down into manageable, human-sized questions for listeners to ponder, in the process showing us how we can amplify life's small moments of joy by staying open to love and connection. As Lamott notes in Dusk, Night, Dawn, "I got Medicare three days before I got hitched, which sounds like something an old person might do, which does not describe adorably ageless me." Marrying for the first time with a grown son and a grandson, Lamott explains that finding happiness with a partner isn't a function of age or beauty but of outlook and perspective.

Full of the honesty, humor, and humanity that have made Lamott beloved by millions, Dusk, Night, Dawn is classic Anne Lamott - thoughtful and comic, warm and wise - and further proof that Lamott truly speaks to the better angels in all of us.

Critic reviews

"Dusk Night Dawn delivers prose that satisfices literary as well as spiritual tastes." (The Washington Post)

"She is brilliant. Her writing makes me weep." (Hoda Kotb, Today Show)

"In difficult times, is there a more soothing voice than Lamott’s? Her latest book on the trickiness of faith and hope is chock-full of her trademark wit, at once self-deprecating and self-aggrandizing. And this is her first book since getting married in 2019, so those honest insights about choosing love amid anxiety are sure to shine even brighter." (Bookpage)

Listening to Anne read ( I dovetailed listening and reading) sent magic into my veins. I belief her imitation of St. Peter alone was worth the listen. She is so honest- more than any other memoirist that can think of, and my body is still smiling days after finishing this perfect slim volume. Thank you Anne for inspiring me to write a poem from my heart- to live and appreciate the complexities of intertwined how and sorrow. Beautifully done!

Injection of warmth, humor and reflection; always!

Thank you, Anne Lamott, for your hilarious/heartbreaking/heartwarming stories shining like headlights in a dark night. For beaming your humanity, your humor, your honesty so courageously and generously that I can see myself, my true, broken and beautiful self with greater love and forgiveness, and see others with greater love and forgiveness as well. Thank you for making me laugh in the dark tonight when I could not sleep. Thank you for being a writer who makes me want to write and live and love more courageously and generously. Thank you for your beautiful, raspy-cool voice which kept me good company until dawn.

Anne Lamott as a writer and a gorgeously flawed, kindred soul touches my heart, makes us giggle, and gives me a sense of hope that is all too often absent in our everyday lives. She reminds us that faith, humor, resilience, hope, and Love are all still possible in a broken world for all of us imperfect people. She teaches eloquently - with such truth, authenticity, and, at times, exquisite playfulness- that these are the beauties that, not only sustain us and help us to survive, but live and love in spite of it all. Again and again and again.
Thank you, dear, sweet, lovely, Anne Lamott! I will keep reading! “Dusk, Night, Dawn” is feeds my soul, heart, and spirit.

I love Anne Lamott but couldn’t continue to listen to this. She sounds like Lily Tomlin as if she were drunk, stoned, and depressed all at the same time. Sorry!

There are so many things I love about Anne Lamott’s books, but my favorite thing is that she narrates them herself. Her hilarious insights and raw honesty will make you hang on every word. I’m always sad when they’re over. I want to be her wrinkly, old and imperfect friend!

Another Great One!

I listen to Lamott's books to renew my faith and to release my guilt, sharing the laughter that comes from her wonderful honest testimony. However, I had a reaction listening to Dust, Night, Dawn that I've never experienced before-- not from a book. . Anne was comparing/describing her parents to the artifacts of each of her parents. As she was comparing/describing her mother's life and feelings --- I stopped the audio. NO, Wait. That's MY mother..I watched that pain and I know what comes next.... I can't hear this, not yet. What a writer! But prepare yourself. It's her very best.

WAIT - I'm not ready to hear this next part.
