He stopped, hovering above her lips, giving her the opportunity to back away...create space between them. Instead, she leaned into him, met his kiss. The moments evaporated as he held her, a touch as light as if she were a cherry blossom he could crush.

Get caught up in romance and suspense with this novella from award-winning author Cara Putman.

Things were business as usual for family law attorney Ciara Turner, until she walked into her mentor’s office to find the judge had been murdered. To make things worse, the emotional moments were witnessed by Ciara’s nemesis, opposing counsel David Evans - the man she once thought she’d spend the rest of her life with.

David can’t walk away from the murder investigation. Judge Palmer was the only one who believed in him enough to give the boy from the wrong side of the tracks a fighting chance. But his amateur sleuthing keeps him crossing paths with Ciara and he can’t help but admire her passion for her clients, even if they are often at odds across the judgment table.

As David and Ciara get closer to discovering who killed Judge Palmer, their old feelings reignite. But the investigation takes an unexpected turn, can they trust each other enough to push for the truth? And will their rekindled relationship survive the aftermath?

Quick Listen With a Mystery and a Message

Ciara and Daniel’s story is short and sweet. A great quick read or listen. The series follows lawyers who attended George Mason School of Law together and now practice in the Northern Virginia area. The author does a fantastic job of describing the neighborhoods in which they live, work, and dine in a way that makes this former resident homesick. The books also cover more than just the legal issues the lawyers face. In this book, two former clerks (Ciara and Daniel) make choices about how to build a Family Law practice after leaving the court. Initially, their choices push them apart. Ciara represents the women while Daniel many of the men her clients are leaving. Ciara doesn’t see how she can respect Daniel if she doesn’t respect the people he represents. The judge’s murder brings them shockingly back together and gives them a second chance while they stay in touch discussing the judge, his mentorship, life, and God instead of just the cases they have together while they wait to find out who killed the judge.

When they see a potential suspect behaving suspiciously, the tip eventually leads to an arrest. And a decision point in their relationship.

The book reminds us that we rarely have all the information behind others’ decisions and sometimes it pays to dig deeper before judging. I truly enjoyed the suspense story and the larger message.

I received a free copy of the audible book to review. The production quality and narrator are excellent.
