Any resemblance to history is accidental but...

If you could sum up EMPEROR: The Gates of Rome, Book 1 (Unabridged) in three words, what would they be?

Not history, fun.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

There was plenty of suspense and battle scenes are thrilling.

Which scene was your favorite?

Marius was a wonderful character and every scene with him was excellent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

Adding Robert Glenister to my list of best ever, along with Martin Jarvis and George Guidel.
The narrator is, in my opinion, the single most important feature of any audible book. I don't think I will listen to any of this series that doesn't have Glenister narration.

My newest addiction

Some time ago i finished most of Bernard Cornwell's books and it was sad because i didn't have any more of these great historic pieces to read. This series will definitely scratch that itch, i think.

A delight

The subjects lead very interesting lives to be sure, but Mr. Iggulden makes reading it a pleasure with his skill and research. And Mr. Glenister allows you to be swallowed up into the story. Thank you to both.

Brings Rome to Life

I enjoyed the story very much. The narrator is probably the best reason to read it. (I enjoyed this narrator in the Cormoran Strike series and clicked on his name to find more books read by him.)

If you like historical fiction, this is a good book for you. Now I’m off to purchase book 2!

a fantastic book

loved it. well written, and well read. both the author and the narrator combine to draw you into their world, where you feel the characters emotions, and become personally invested in many of them

Another Conn Iggeldon winner

Having finished Iggeldon's six book Conquerer series about Genghis Khan, I was looking forward to having thre Emperor series still ahead of me. My initial thought was that this story can't possibly be as interesting as the story of Genghis, but it holds its own.

I'm writing this review having finished the whole series, and like the Conquerer series I'll rate the Emperor series as a whole, and as a whole it's a great story, well executed, and well performed. It's hard for me to imagine that anyone could possibly read this first book of the series and stop. If you buy this download, I guarantee you'll be buying the next three, and if you haven't read the Conquerer series, you'll be buying six more on top of that. You'll wish there were more.
