About this listen

Amid the carnage of the 100 Years War - the bloodiest conflict in medieval history - a young English archer confronts his destiny....

England, 1346: For Thomas Blackstone, the choice is easy - dance on the end of a rope for a murder he did not commit, or take up his war bow and join the king's invasion.

As he fights his way across northern France, Blackstone learns the brutal lessons of war - from the terror and confusion of his first taste of combat, to the savage realities of siege warfare.

Blackstone will brave the terrors of the High Alps in winter, face the Black Prince in tournament, confront the bloody anarchy of a popular revolt, and emerge from the Battle of Crecy as a knight.

He may yet defy death but he can't defy his destiny: Master of War.

Collected in a single volume for the first time, the first three novels in the epic Master of War series, comprising of: Master of War, Defiant unto Death, and Gate of the Dead.

Outstanding story and narration.

So very enjoyable! Excellent research and the narration and story are first class. Don't want it to end! . . . Edit/update: the above was written during second book section. I will now express that Sir Thomas should have left his sniveling, back-stabbing wife when he had the chance(s).

Masterfully and emotionally written,

This was one of the most descriptive and raw books when it came to the battle scenes, I loved the way it entwined history and fiction, I felt it exposed the past for what it truly was that being barbaric. And exposed the Royalty for who they truly were, Brave, but bordering on insanity.

worthy of your time

I like the story it was a pretty good listen. The ending kind of catches you off guard which wasn't anticipated. I was hoping that i'd hear more. If there was more books on this series I would definitely read them

Thrilling

It was a pleasure to read and hear Gilman's craft develop and improve and grow over these three books. I really cared about the characters, so much so that I bought the rest of the books in the series. It's an enthralling period of late medieval history as well. Reading these books has spurred on some further research I had been interested in completing. Great series.

Great historical story

As a history nerd I truly loved this story, the characters and most definitely the narration. Can't wait to listen to the next 3 books in the series.

Entertaining.

I enjoy historical fiction and this series didn't disappoint. It's an interesting tale of an uncommon commoner.

Compelling storytelling

Heroic protagonists and vile villans in tales well-told. The characters were drawn vividly and the battles were gratifyingly horrific.

Master of War (1-3)

A great series so far. I truly enjoyed Cornell’s Saxon Chronicles & Audible suggested these Books. I was pleasantly surprised. They’re every bit as exciting, engaging & entertaining. I’ll definitely continue the rest of the series.
