About this listen

The date is AD 15. The German chieftain Arminius has been defeated, one of the lost Roman eagles recovered and thousands of German tribesmen slain. Yet these successes aren't nearly enough for senior centurion Lucius Tullus. Not until Arminius is dead, his old legion's eagle found and the enemy tribes completely vanquished will he rest.

But Arminius - devious, fearless - is burning for revenge of his own. Charismatic as ever, he raises another large tribal army, which will carry the Romans the length and breadth of the land. Soon Tullus finds himself in a cauldron of bloodshed, treachery and danger. His mission to retrieve his legion's eagle will be his most perilous yet....

Why can't reviews be like Goodreads?

Sometimes I want to rate a book without writing about it, so I can continue getting recommendations based on my interests without having to write a book report. This story was very-well written, transporting and narration was good.

Great books

Wonderful series, the writer does an excellent job of immersing the reader in the era. Also very laudable for no moral grandstanding and trying to inject modern sensibilities into the story. It is not nihilistically amoral but treats the characters/factions as very human, with actions both admirable and shameful. Big thanks to the author for the good work.

Great to the last word

Another great Ben Kane series! The emotions of the previous two novels come to a perfect climax. Would recommend to anyone regardless of being into Roman History or not as the series had great characters and vivid battle scenes.

Top notch novel about the Roman Legions

For those who are interested in Roman history or the Legions, this book is outstanding. It is the last book of a trilogy dealing with the aftermath of the treachery of Arminius, a Germanic tribal leader, who used his position as a Legion auxiliary to lead the Legions into an ambush, wiping out most of them and stealing the Eagle standards of three legions.

Although this book is the last one of the trilogy, it can be read as a stand alone novel. The descriptions of the interactions between the Legionaries will ring true for those of us who served in our respective countries' armed forces. The battles between the Germanic tribes under Arminius vs the Roman Legions under General Germanicus are well described, making the reader feel as if he/she were there.

I plan to read other books by Ben Kane, as this one, as well as Hunting the Eagles, are outstanding novels.
