About this listen

Could you ever love the unrepentant rake who won you in a wager?

He didn’t gamble on losing his heart when he won her at the gaming tables.

Pierce, the Earl of Wainthorpe has finally thwarted his worst enemy. Except he can’t revel in his victory after winning his foe’s ward in a winner-takes-all wager. If Pierce refuses to assume Bianca Salisbury’s guardianship, the fiery-haired beauty with a matching temper may very well find herself sold to the highest bidder.

The shameful secret she guards makes it impossible to love a rogue.

Desperate to escape her blackguard cousin, Bianca Salisbury ventures to London to find a husband or employment. Instead, she’s bartered to a notorious rakehell. She either risks being compromised and accepts The Earl of Wainthorpe’s protection, or flees him and her guardian. But without money and a place to go, she fears she’ll face the same tragic fate as her mother.

Caution: This romance features a sexy, irredeemable scoundrel determined to thumb his nose at the haut ton, a saucy country miss unafraid to speak her mind but terrified of even a hint of scandal, a unlikely aristocratic matchmaker, a trio of busybody sisters you’ll adore, and a very pregnant calico that is convinced humans are only around for her convenience.

For a pause-resisting historical romance novel brimming with Regency England’s rakish dukes and rapscallion lords, buy this passionate adventure sprinkled with suspense and humor. You won’t be able to put it down.

Enjoyable Sweet Romance

Pierce, the Earl of Wainthorpe, lost a loved one at a young age under violent circumstances, and he's spent years plotting his revenge. At a high stakes card game with the man responsible, the man ups the ante and bets the guardianship of his young cousin, fiery Bianca Salisbury. Knowing that Bianca could be gambled away by the villain the next night, Pierce accepts the stakes. When Bianca finds her fate in the hands of a known rake, she fears her reputation will be ruined.

I really enjoyed this sweet romance! The beginning was suspenseful and the card game had me on pins and needles. The tension between Pierce and Bianca was palpable, without any explicit scenes. There were some funny moments, especially Bianca's sewing skills, and I wish the three sisters had more page time! It's a sweet romance I'd definitely recommend.

The narration was done well, with different voices for each character. He was a pleasure to listen to and pulled me right into the story. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

Wicked Earl's? Yes, please.

Regency romances are one of my favorite book genre's. This one was really well-done.

The wicked Earl in question was only bad on the surface. It served him well on his vendetta's but caused quite a lot of friction with his new ward. It made for a very delightful read.

I absolutely loved the narrator. I honestly can't recall if Manning is male or female; the presentation for both was exceptional.

If there are other books in this series, I'm all in.

Wicked and Lovely

I loved listening to this book! The story was well written and well narrated. I was pulled into the story and felt like I was a member of the cast. Pierce and Bianca are a perfect match for wits and stubbornness and so much more. I absolutely loved hearing their story unfold. It was fun to hear about some other characters from previous books and other stories by the author, although if you hadn't read them you might not have caught the name drops. I would definitely recommend this book!! I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Hero loses heart after winning at card game!

The Earl of Wainthorpe is a wonderful “guardianship” regency romance. It is the third book in the Wicked Earls' Club series and the first audiobook I’ve ever listened to written by Collette Cameron. It is well written in the point of view of the hero, with strong characters, and not too much sex.

The story begins with Pierce, the Earl of Wainthorpe, in a card game against his worst enemy, Lord Fairfax, the man who killed his mother in India when he was a small boy. Fairfax is desperate for a victory and in the kitty was the deed to his ancestral home. After watching Fairfax mention how he was willing to barter his young niece Bianca Salisbury to the highest bidder, Pierce demands that Fairfax include Bianca in the wager. Pierce did so, not because he wanted a wife, ward, or mistress, but rather to save Bianca from the misdeeds of her unscrupulous uncle who is sure to sell Bianca to the highest bidder. Needless to say, Pierce won.

The rest of the story is about how Pierce and Bianca learned to trust each other after she makes several attempts to run away. Pierce admires her independence, talents, and feisty nature. However, Bianca never again wants to be in the position to be reliant on anyone after being mistreated by those responsible for her in the past. She also doesn’t want Pierce to marry her merely to protect her reputation, but rather because he truly loves her. Despite her valiant attempts to thwart off her feelings for Pierce, Bianca eventually succumbs, acknowledging he is nothing like her father or uncle (and he loves her).

I listened to the audiobook version of this story narrated by Joff Manning. He did a fantastic job, giving all of the characters a unique voice. He also had good intonation and pace. In summary, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audiobook and recommend it to anyone who enjoys regency romance.

Not your average Earl

Amanda Lyn here again from your favorite romance audiobook review source, Sounds Like Romance.

For a short historical romance, this title was fun though not overly sexy (despite featuring a sexy scoundrel). Listeners who want heat early on will have to wait until the epilogue, which may be a deal-breaker for some.

I really enjoyed that the Earl, himself, had Indian heritage and that it gave him a different view of the haut ton than any of his peers, which made for a refreshing perspective in a genre desperately in need of more characters of color. Listeners may find themselves frustrated with the heroine's tendency to run (despite having nowhere to go and no plan) but the Earl's meddling sisters were written with great personalities and the back-and-forth with the cat was cute.

While I did enjoy Joff Manning's performance in general, there was a quality to the recording that I can only describe as a "tin tone". It was a metallic quality to the recording from start to finish that you couldn't really get around, even by increasing or decreasing the listening speed. This aspect, I hate to say, really reduced the enjoyability for me and took an otherwise 4-star rating down to a 3-star because that metallic, almost echoing sound, took away from Manning's portrayals of the story.

Earl of Wainthorpe

Collette has written a truly heartfelt love story. It is of Pearce and Lily. They were an amazing couple. I enjoyed this audiobook but have also read the book. I hope you decide to read/listen to this awesome regency book.

Enjoyable Regency Romance

I really enjoyed this story, and the fact that it was told from the hero's point of view. I loved the two main characters, as they both had tragedy in their past, but were strong and persevering. How horrible as a young woman to be foisted upon an uncaring male relative, and be subject to insult and injury without recourse! I loved the way the Earl proved himself to be a hero, eventually falling for the heroine despite his belief that he wanted to remain unfettered. From the start, he set himself out to be a true guardian, making sure she had a safe place to live, proper clothes, and even a lady's maid...all on his dime. No matter what the reputation he had or encouraged, he was more like a guardian angel.

I enjoyed the narration. It was a nice change from the predominantly female point of view. Mr. Manning's delivery was smooth, natural, and well paced. I would happily listen to other books he narrated.

Wainthorpe's Wager

Pierce was determined to take everything from Lord Fairfax. He wagered and won, but got more than he bargained for when that everything included guardianship of Fairfax’s cousin, the beautiful, feisty Bianca Salisbury. What’s he to do with her?

Once you get passed the tension of the card game, this is a fun story. Bianca is spunky and has an independent streak. Pierce has to learn to deal with Bianca and respectability (he was happy being a rogue). As they spend time together, an attraction develops. He gets advice from the Earl of Coventry and his absolutely delightful sisters. Now that Pierce has revenge and Bianca is free of her cruel cousin, can they find a happily ever after? It looks as though it might be difficult, but love and a trio of “helpful” sisters might just find a way. The characters, story, wit and humor, and the ending are what you expect from Collette Cameron – engaging, entertaining, and of course, romantic.

Listening to Joff Manning read this story was a delight. He has a great voice for narration, and his character voicing is terrific.
