About this listen

Dash Keane is about to become the biggest star in history.

As a poor teenager living in the Dregs, Dash Keane can only escape his dismal reality by competing in illegal rooftop races and staying up late to watch the timenet with his younger brother.

When there is an opportunity to participate in a competition set thousands of years in the past, he uses his rooftop racer skills to catch the eye of Mr. Myrtrym, head of entertainment for the massive Dominus Corporation.

It is the chance of a lifetime when Dominus Corp. hires Dash to be a timestar—the focus of his own series in which he must survive some of the most dangerous periods in history, including the Cretaceous period, feudal Japan, the Wild West, and the Golden Age of Piracy.

But when empathy for the people of the past conflicts with the desires of his new employer, he must decide whether the price of fame is worth it, a decision that may cost him everything.

Great Book With Lingering Questions

I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a tight and fast story with an original concept of time travel.

There are spoilers in the rest of this review.

I heard this author speak on the Fantastical Truth podcast and I just had to listen to his book.

This story really takes you for a ride. The different concept of time travel that this author has developed is very appealing and refreshing after all of the same types of time travel stories that have come before. The concept of a time stream sparked a two hour discussion with some of my coworkers at lunch one day, which is a good sign.

Overall, the characters were relatable, and the story progressed well, but I was left with some questions that I wish had been explained, just a tad bit more to heighten the stakes in the story :

- Just how powerful is the Dominus corporation? It feels like they are set up to be in control of almost everything, but all of the ways that the character slips through their grasp makes me feel like they aren’t, but it’s never explained. This was huge for me when he ran from Mertrem from El Dorado. That would be a ridiculous move if they were in charge of all of the Lily pads and the tech inside of his body (which it is set up to seem so).

- What are the limits to the implanted tech that Dash gets in his body? It feels like they should be able to record everything from inside of his implants in his eyes and track every single place he goes, so in some of the story elements I wasn’t sure where the tension was supposed to be coming from. Also, with the cameras, sometimes he mentions the cameras being on him when he doesn’t see anything and other times, he mentions not seeking cameras so he doesn’t think there are any. Similar to the hunger games in that sense, because you’re never sure if it’s being filmed or not.

- The time stream is explained fairly simply, which works really well to service the story, but I wish there were just a few bit more details of the limitations and warnings there are when dealing with time. Overall, the time stream concept was very satisfying, I just wish I knew a bit more.

I had a great time listening to this book, it was just a few plot choices that I disagreed with along the way. Also, the books resolution at the end was not very satisfying, and it felt kind of like a cop out after everything the characters had been through. Would he really stay in that time period with no civilization and abandon everyone after he learned the lesson not to abandon everyone? Would he even be able to survive in that natural world after growing up in a futuristic society? I would have much rather see a resolution take place in the present where things are starting to correct themselves. Also, they aren’t positive that there isn’t another lily pad somewhere in that time that Mertrem can crawl to, which is kind of annoying.

None of this is to diminish the quality of the writing, and pacing of the story. The action was great, the romance was sweet, and all of the settings were described just enough to carry the imagination. I think this is a fantastic book by Clint Hall, and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a tight and fast story With an original concept of time travel.

Ready Player One meets Doctor Who

This book was such a blast.

Client Hall balances the fun and games of a teenager playing with time travel with the high stakes action of great YA Science Fiction.

Well, the story itself is great, and also digs at deep existential questions about our humanity and just who and what we are made to be.

Can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
