Publisher's summary
What’s lurking in the Mist is the least of their worries....
In a world where humanity lives in the sky to escape a deadly mist below, Cass’s only goal is survival. That is, until she finds a job on the airship Daedalus as a diver. Now she explores ruined cities, looking for treasure and people’s lost heirlooms until a young man hires her to find the impossible: a way to eradicate the Mist.
Theodore Winchester is a member of one of the Five Families that rule the skies. Following in his father’s footsteps, he searches for the source of the Mist and hopes to stop the purges used to control overpopulation. But what he finds are horrifying secrets and lethal ambition. If he continues his quest, it could mean his own death.
The Mist is rising and soon the world will be enveloped in its deadly embrace, turning what's left of humanity into the undead.

Story
In the wake of WWII, a grieving fisherman submits a poem to a local newspaper: a rallying cry for hope, purpose...and rocks. When the poem spreads farther than he ever intended, Robert Bliss's humble words change the tide of a nation. Boxes of rocks inundate the tiny coastal Maine town, and he sets his calloused hands to work, but the building halts when tragedy strikes. Decades later, Annie Bliss is summoned back to Ansel-by-the-Sea when she learns her Great-Uncle Robert, the man who became her refuge during the hardest summer of her youth, is now the one in need of help.

Timely
If you like strong determined heroines, you’ll love Cass! No apologies on her tongue. She does what she must to survive, yet, she’s not arrogant or lazy. She’s realistic. And intelligent. This book barely scratches the surface of this story—satisfying but unfinished. I’m looking forward to more secrets and discoveries in book 2. More of Cass (changed or not) and more of Theo. Narrator has a few quirks with certain words, but overall did an adequate job.

Great story and excellent narration!
This was my first book by Morgan Busse and I'm so happy I listened to it! Narrator Taylor Meskimen was excellent. I will listen to anything she narrates. I was really intrigued by the steampunk aspect of this world and was trying to figure out how that was going to work. I loved it. But can you say cliffhanger? Book 2 needs to happen very soon!

Steampunk Perfection
This book is steampunk perfection.
Cass is a strong heroine with her bravery and street smarts.
Theo is an inquisitive intellectual with his own physical toughness despite his pampered upbringing.
The pacing is great with the mystery spiraling out from the beginning with plenty of action and a creepy villain. Oh and there are zombies and zeppelins.
I can’t wait for book 2!

A great and unique story
This is officially the first steampunk zombie book I’ve ever read. A manmade zombifying spore mist has taken over the world, and only a young nobleman and a street urchin girl can save it…
I loved this read. Political intrigue, power, sacrifice, and a quest to save mankind. It has a post-apocalyptic feel, a class-based society where the bottom rung gets methodically “purged” as a form of population control.
Despite the darker premise, the story itself is uplifting and hopeful. There is a super-sweet romance (nothing objectionable, with only a couple brief kisses). The language is clean and the violence is minimal. There is a message of faith and God, but I wouldn’t call it truly Christian.
I admit, I was a little disappointed with the ending. It felt sudden and rushed and left me going “oh, wait… what?” I would have loved for Busse to have done a 3rd book, to address the HUGE open items left at the end of book 2 (like the mist and turned). There was so much left to solve and build out… instead it was wrapped up in a half-chapter epilogue 😔
That said, it was absolutely still 5 stars in my book… and would have been promptly added to ‘my very favorites’ book shelf if the ending had been a hair more satisfying.
Note, there are 2 books to the story, so make sure you have Blood Secrets available before starting Secrets in the Mist. Neither book is standalone.

Zombies…
Not one review or description of the book mentioned zombies. But they are in there. In Christian fiction? Doesn’t seem fitting.
