About this listen

Standing at the towering height of 6 ft 9 in, Ed Kemper could make for an intimidating figure. He meticulously planned out his crimes, and for years went undetected.

This is the story of the so-called 'Co-Ed Killer', whose brutal murders shocked America. Over the course of a decade, he killed ten victims, including several young female students as well as his own mother. Offering rides to unsuspecting hitchhikers, he took them back to his place, raped them and then dismembered the bodies.

In this disturbing biography, crime writer and journalist Al Cimino delves into this terrifying tale, providing a detailed account of Kemper's twisted crimes and the compulsion that brought a man to commit such horrible deeds.

Prolific true crimer writer Al Cimino documents the deranged life of serial killer, Ed Kemper, commonly known as the Co-Ed killer. His murderous episodes flew under the radar of authorities until Kemper turned himself in to the authorities. While in custody, Kemper provided precise details of his many murders. Kemper took pleasure picking up vulnerable young women as they hitched rides during the early 1970's.

There appeared to be a method to his madness. Kemper killed his grandparents as a teenager, but was able to seal his Juvenile records, allowing him to purchase firearms. He made friends, dated, and was establishing himself as a trusted member of society. However, Kemper was plotting and preparing for the "right victim." Like many serial killers, Kemper was cruel to animals in his youth and was raised by a dysfunctional and abusive mother. Many have theorized that Kemper murdering girls was in preparation for one day killing his mother, which he ultimately did.

Kemper grew to be six feet, nine inches tall and weighing 280 pounds. At age 15, he was six feet, 4 inches, and described himself as a "walking time bomb." Court psychiatrists diagnosed Kemper with paranoid schizophrenia. After brutally killing his grandparents, Kemper was incarcerated and would be eventually released on parole. Cimino dives into Kemper's diabolic mind citing the many interviews Kemper granted after his imprisonment.

If you want to go deep inside the mind of a serial killer, I definitely recommend this book. The author uncovers the false media reports on Kemper's murders, which allowed Kemper to continue his killing spree. It is alarming to realize that Kemper would have likely continued to kill young women had he not turned himself in. The book concludes with police transcriptions of Kemper's many confessions, and his trial. Mack Gordon provides flawless narration.

Very good book. Narration was very good. Kemper was a very smart guy. The system to a degree let him down but Ed's intelligence and expert manipulation was no match for even a perfect system.
