About this listen
From an internationally acclaimed economist, a provocative call to jump-start economic growth by aggressively overhauling liberal democracy
Around the world, people who are angry at stagnant wages and growing inequality have rebelled against established governments and turned to political extremes. Liberal democracy, history's greatest engine of growth, now struggles to overcome unprecedented economic headwinds - from aging populations to scarce resources to unsustainable debt burdens. Hobbled by short-term thinking and ideological dogma, democracies risk falling prey to nationalism and protectionism that will deliver declining living standards.
In Edge of Chaos, Dambisa Moyo shows why economic growth is essential to global stability, and why liberal democracies are failing to produce it today. Rather than turning away from democracy, she argues, we must fundamentally reform it. Edge of Chaos presents a radical blueprint for change in order to galvanize growth and ensure the survival of democracy in the 21st century.

Story
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Mission Economy looks at the challenges facing us in a radically new way. Global warming, pollution, dementia, obesity, gun violence, mobility—these environmental, health, and social dilemmas are huge, complex, and have no simple solutions. Mariana Mazzucato argues we need to think bigger and mobilize our resources in a way that is as bold as inspirational as the moon landing—this time to the most "wicked" social problems of our time. We can only begin to find answers if we fundamentally restructure capitalism to make it inclusive, sustainable, and driven by innovation.

Discrimination and Disparities challenges believers in such one-factor explanations of economic outcome differences as discrimination, exploitation, or genetics. In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

One recent estimate predicts 13 million American workers will lose their jobs within the next seven years - jobs that won't be replaced. In a future marked by restlessness and chronic unemployment, what will happen to American society? In The War on Normal People, Andrew Yang paints a dire portrait of the American economy. Rapidly advancing technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation software are making millions of Americans' livelihoods irrelevant.

An accessible, story-driven look at the future of the global economy, written by a leading expert, Extreme Economies revives a foundational idea from medical science to turn the logic of modern economics on its head, arguing that the outlier economies are the place to learn about our own future. Whether following Punjabi migrants through the lawless Panamanian jungle or visiting a day-care for the elderly modeled after a casino, Davies brings a storyteller’s eye to places where the economy has been destroyed, distorted, and even turbocharged.

"These ideas arrive as something of a relief..." (Financial Times)
"The author's program of remedy is provocative and of much interest to advocates of growth. Moyo clearly identifies systemic problems that the democracies-or what's left of them-would do well to address." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Edge of Chaos represents an important warning that America's global clout and the global order itself are 'under threat.'" (National Review)

Both sides and practically all analyses of the crisis so far take for granted that the economic growth from the early 1950s until 2000 - interrupted only by the troubled 1970s - represented a normal performance.

How did we get here, and how can we emerge from the longest downturn in recent memory? Daniel Alpert, a progressive Wall Street banker and economist, argues that we are living in the age of oversupply.

Story
Thomas Piketty's work has proved that unfettered markets lead to increasing inequality. Without meaningful regulation, capitalist economies will concentrate wealth in an ever smaller number of hands. Armed with this knowledge, democratic societies face a defining challenge: fending off a new aristocracy. For years Piketty has wrestled with this problem in his monthly newspaper column, which pierces the surface of current events to reveal the economic forces underneath.

The biggest threat to the United States comes not from abroad but from within. This is the provocative, timely, and unexpected message of Council on Foreign Relations President Richard N. Haass’ Foreign Policy Begins at Home. A rising China, climate change, terrorism, a nuclear Iran, a turbulent Middle East, and a reckless North Korea all present serious challenges. But U.S. national security depends even more on the United States addressing its burgeoning deficit and debt, crumbling infrastructure, second-class schools, and outdated immigration system

Story
Raghuram Rajan was one of the few economists who warned of the global financial crisis before it hit. Now, as the world struggles to recover, it's tempting to blame what happened on just a few greedy bankers who took irrational risks and left the rest of us to foot the bill. In Fault Lines, Rajan argues that serious flaws in the economy are also to blame, and warns that a potentially more devastating crisis awaits us if they aren't fixed.

As a new administration focuses on raising American energy production, O'Sullivan's Windfall describes how new energy realities have profoundly affected the world of international relations and security. New technologies led to oversupplied oil markets and an emerging natural gas glut. This did more than drive down prices. It changed the structure of markets and altered the way many countries wield power and influence.

Forget the G-7 and the G-20; we are entering a leaderless "G- Zero" era- with profound implications for every country and corporation. The world power structure is facing a vacuum at the top. With the unifying urgency of the financial crisis behind us, the diverse political and economic values of the G-20 are curtailing the world's most powerful governments' ability to mediate growing global challenges. There is no viable alternative group to take its place.

informative
I enjoyed the book. It was well-structured and clearly defined the problems faced by this countryand the entire planet. While I couldn't agree with all the proposed solutions, I appreciate the courage and thoughtfulness required to propose the solutions. It was a great initial step in starting the conversations in which we must ultimately engage.

Great story, impeccable facts, unrealizable sugges
Ms. Moyo's detailed synopsis of the current state of international economic disorder is a chilling wake up warning nudging us back to reality. I found Edge of Chaos really two books - book one a warning and book two (her last chapter) her required prescriptions for reform and survival.
I had a hard time accepting a number of Ms. Moyo's prescriptions, which appear to focus solely on economic processes while ignoring the sociological issues driving real human beings and societies. Banging home the point that today being a liberal democracy doesn't guarantee economic stability nor well being, ignores the part that being slaves to economic theory is equally unacceptable and likely unrealizable. This is particularly so in the United States, even in the shadow of America's long torturous history where inhumane treatment of human beings ruled the day...
I too am extremely concerned by the voting patterns of so-called mature liberal democracies, but I also in expressing my preferences have the right to "not vote" as well as the right to select "none of the above." Term limits, IMHO is an anathema to the very democratic principle of one person one vote and ultimately caves in to societal dangers inherent in short term decision and policy making generated by the monitization of politics.

A prescient and brilliant book
This book will be ignored at our peril. It’s states the need for major reforms to our democracy in order to save it. Some of the changes will be controversial but all should be discussed. If her data is correct we are in for a long hard time

Underwhelming
The body of the work reads like a college student's paper or cut past from a couple of years of articles from the economist. She presents random factoids, quotes and assertions and draws conclusions which are subjective opinions at best. It goes down hill from there with her recommendations which for each one there are equally strong arguments why they would not work or would not have the desired impact. "Insist politicians have a career outside of politics" she claims will help fix the problem - two best examples of that are Trump and George W!. Make voting compulsory like Australia but also like the Congo - a great example. Pay politicians bonus for targets like growing GDP - you'd be paying Trump a bonus for his tax cuts! Growth solves the problem - we can't grow infinitum!
She either glosses over or ignores the key issues of; culture, intergenerational and religious wars, overpopulation, inequality and the biggest issue of all - no matter how much growth there is there are an increasing number of losers and if you open the flood gates for free movement of people which she prefers then there will only be more disaffected voters in the west.
Rather than waste valuable time reading/listening to this I would suggest Francis Fukuyama' Political Order and Political Decay and Thomas Piketty's Capital in the Twenty First Century for some impressive scholarship and an understanding of the causes for our demise and potential solutions.
