About this listen

The prize-winning author of Edinburgh Twilight returns to the darkening shadows of nineteenth-century Scotland to track a killer on a profane mission of revenge.

A wicked Scottish winter has just begun when pioneering female physician Sophia Jex-Blake calls on Detective Inspector Ian Hamilton to investigate the suspicious death of one of her patients - a railroad lineman who she believes succumbed to the horrific effects of arsenic poisoning. The most provocative aspect of the case doesn’t escape Hamilton: the married victim’s numerous sexual transgressions.

Now, for the first time since the unexplained fire that killed his parents, Hamilton enters the Royal Infirmary to gain the insights of brilliant medical student Arthur Conan Doyle. Then a second poisoning occurs - this time, a prominent banker who died in the bed of a prostitute. It appears that someone is making Edinburgh’s more promiscuous citizens pay for their sins.

As the body count rises and public panic takes hold, Hamilton and Doyle delve into the seedy underbelly of the city, where nothing is as it seems, no one is immune to murder, and even trusted friends can be enemies in disguise.

I did not Like that they change the narrator from the 1st book. The new narrator read the characters completely different. The story was good but I had a very difficult time with the change. As Already Had an outlook on the characters Which changed with the new narrator. it's a good book but you can't do a series and flame the voices each book

Changed narrators

Everything about this audible is wonderful. From the suspenseful and introspective writing to the narrator who does Scottish accents justice. This book is pleasure to immerse yourself in from the very first word uttered until the last. I can’t wait for the next book! Ms. Lawrence please gie oan wi' it.

I am not a fan of crime novels but I am a definite fan of this series!

I liked the book and all the characters and how life like they were as the story was read to me by Audible.

I liked the accents of the characters.

One of the things I enjoy about this series is the occasional quote from Shakespeare, Robert Burns, and others. In this particular episode, there is an ongoing preparation for a Shakespearean play in the background. This may be too much for some, but I found it a lot of fun. I do have one concern about these brothers in their digs. Who is doing their laundry? Those clean sheets don’t appear by magic. Who is cleaning their bathroom? Who is keeping their kitchen clean and doing their grocery shopping? I know this is fiction, but it seems impossible to me that these two extremely busy men don’t need help.

A clever plot mirroring a play

Enjoyed the story, however the narrator was better on Edinburgh Twilight, more emotional with proper accents. Story plot could have been more condensed, with less emphasis on tertiary characters. But I choose this book because it is a Victorian mystery and unique with a female serial killer.

Spicy Victorian mistory

I love this series! Ian Hamilton is flawed but lovable and relatable. The introduction of new characters is proving to enrichen the landscape of the Hamilton clan.
This particular book deserves a warning for childhood assault survivors. There are a few graphic, childhood assault scenes which could be triggering. Fortunately these scenes are short and easily skipped.

Great Series!

I loved this book but was a bit disappointed that it was not the same Narrator. Simon Mattacks did a fine job but I was use to the voices being different. Also his female voices were not very different from each other. This story was hard because of how graphic it was with the abuse the young girl went through. I cannot wait for book 3.

Another good book in the series.

I find the focus characters sympathetic and likable. Also, enjoy the Edinburgh settings and descriptions. Story lines predictable but overall a good escape listen.

The narration was much better than in Book 1 - Edinburgh Twilight.
