About this listen

An unpopular victim. An impossible crime. A murderer on the loose.

Revised edition: Previously published as The Body in Jingling Pot, this edition of The Body in the Dales includes editorial revisions.

A body is discovered deep in a cave beneath the Yorkshire Dales. Leading the investigation into the mysterious death are experienced DCI Jim Oldroyd and his partner DS Carter, a newcomer from London.

The deceased is Dave Atkins, well known throughout the village but not well liked. While there is no shortage of suspects, the details of the crime leave Oldroyd and Carter stumped. How did Atkins’s body end up in such a remote section of the cave? When someone with vital information turns up dead, it becomes clear that whoever is behind the murders will stop at nothing to conceal their tracks.

Oldroyd and his team try to uncover the truth, but every answer unearths a new set of questions. And as secrets and lies are exposed within the close-knit community, the mystery becomes deeper, darker and more complex than the caves below.

99% of what I listen to are British detective stories and I have grown to love this series! In the first book, the narrator’s voice was a little much but it got better and better within that first book and throughout the series. Love the characters and the Christie/Doyle style. Great writing and interesting plot lines.

Great series!

Good book. Learned perhaps more than I wanted to know about caves and caving perhaps because I can't stand enclosed spaces. But otherwise the story was very Good, and the narration was perfect. I highly recommend.

I had this on my wish list for about a year, just unsure if I wanted to read. I am so glad I did. Fantastic story and great characters with interesting backgrounds. The story revolved around the caving world in Yorkshire and rural life which made it interesting from your typical settings. The narrator was ok, not great, but not as bad as other reviewers posted. You can always listen to a sample first so I don't think there is a reason to complain. Looking forward to the next installment.

Really well written

The narrator drove me nuts—felt more like a Harry Potter book than an adult crime novel. The story was just ok.

Overacting!

My first JR Ellis. The story is good and the setting is almost a character. The reader made the dialect understandable and opened my experience of the locale!

The reader is excellent!

I thought the story was good, but with such a large character group, it became difficult to keep tabs on who was who. Fortunately, the narrator did a wonderful job with different voices for different characters that I mostly knew who was speaking based on his voice rather than the character name. I thought the performance of the narrator was truly outstanding.

As for the story, it was good, but not overly intriguing. A body is found in a cave and there was some detail about caves, but I did not think it was too in-depth. I actually enjoyed that part of the story as it was different from any other mystery setting I've read. The number of characters introduced was a bit much for my liking and at the end I did not even really remember the killer(s) being introduced earlier. He/she/they was/were, but I just couldn't recall much about earlier interaction. As such, I felt a little let down about the ending. It did wrap up well, maybe a little too neatly, but no major complaints.

Not sure yet if I'll continue with this series, but I did enjoy the first book overall.

Outstanding Performance

Voices of some characters were so disgusting (to my ear) to begin with I turned it off.
Picked back up and got hooked into the characters and story. The mystery kept me guessing, thought the “romance” between the sergeants way to soon. I do want to read next book.

Almost gave up after first chapter…..

There was so much yelling in the beginning that it turned us off to listen. the story was a little weak in the start but improved as the book went to conclusion.

Difficult to listen.

Another uusually fine
mystery. I had no idea
what a rich world I would find here. It does not move fast- but it is darn hard to set it down and harder to see it end. The illustrator does a fine job of teasing me in.
I see there are more in this series to read. Thank goodness. Thanks to Audible, too :-)

The excellence of writing, characters, mystery/storyline, the country side and humor.

This a wonderful novel. The mystery is intriguing. The characters are authentic. The plot moves at a good pace. The narration is excellent. I really enjoyed this mystery. These books would make a great tv series.

Marvelous
