About this listen

Superstition and murder haunt nineteenth-century Scotland in a twisting mystery by the prize-winning author of Edinburgh Twilight and Edinburgh Dusk.

Spiritualism has captured the public’s imagination. Séances are all the rage, and Detective Ian Hamilton’s otherwise sensible aunt Lillian is not immune to their allure. But for Ian, indulging her superstitions has its limits. When members of Lillian’s circle of séance friends begin turning up dead, Ian doesn’t need a medium to tell him these aren’t freak accidents.

With the help of his friend Arthur Conan Doyle, Ian investigates, and he is soon drawn into a dark world of believers and tricksters, and a puzzling series of murders with no pattern, no motive, and no end in sight. Most alarming, the crimes conjure up the ghosts of Ian’s own past, including the mysterious deaths of his parents, which have haunted him for years.

As two cases converge, science collides with the uncanny, and Ian must confront truths that are more disturbing than he could ever have imagined.

the atmosphere in this series is thick & you can't put the book down tension builds. I see more romance in future & final resolution of parents death are on the table surely

Yet another knock-off Sherlock Holmes tale, this is quite slow-moving. It doesn't violate any of the Holmes' conventions, but it certainly not a page-turner.

Narration is good.

I really enjoyed this book. The police procedural is interesting and probably accurate for the time period. Ms. Lawrence does a great job with the mystery. She reels you in right away with likeable characters plus the addition of Arthur Conan Doyle. Simon Mattacks is fantastic with the narration I highly recommend.

Great historical fiction fun

I have read the first three books in this series and they are absolutely excellent. at this point it looks like the next book hasn't been written yet. That's the one problem with reading a series before it is finished being written. I just want more.

It's a little weird for me not to love this. I've read all 3 books and listened to all 3, too, with Simon Mattacks narrating all 3. I can't pin down what didn't work in this narration. The only thing that I can really think is that it was harder to focus on and follow this story without my actually reading it. I feel like this installment had more character perspectives than previous books and the plot focuses on 2 separate plots with the seance killings and the fire that killed Ian's parents. As talented as he is, I think the story in this one was just too much for a single actor. Having just one more narrator would have really helped me keep track of who and where I was in the story. Even with that criticism, the audiobook did really help me get through the ebook faster.

Oddly lacking something.

I'm convinced we haven't see the last of this great character group. YAY!
