About this listen

With Meg Cabot’s signature “dazzling,” (Romantic Times Book Review), this Victorian romance follows a young woman looking for lessons in love.

Lady Caroline Linford is horrified to discover her fiancé, the Marquis of Winchilsea, in the arms of another woman. Unfortunately, for the rest of Victorian society, this sort of extracurricular activity is par for the course for most men and certainly not reason enough cancel the upcoming wedding.

But Caroline is determined to make sure that the man she is to marry will desire only her, so she enlists the best teacher in the art of romance: London’s most notorious rake, Braden Granville. As their passionate tutelage begins, sparks fly and the lines between teacher and student get increasingly blurred. Now there is just one last lesson to learn: on the subject of true love, the heart chooses its own unpredictable ways.

The story was the perfect balance of lighthearted and engaging. The love story was well developed with characters and dialogue with the author using just enough spice to convey character’s feelings rather than simply for the reader’s entertainment.

The performance was some of the best character voicing I’ve ever heard and I am a significant audiobook consumer. Absolutely magnificent!

Delightful!

Caroline has been a sheltered and pampered lady for her 21 years, despite the fact that her father came from the working class. He developed plumbing systems enjoyed by the Queen and was given an Earlship! They must have been good! So she’s a mix of earnestness and determination to do right, supporting suffrage and the protection of horses. Brandon grew up in 7 Dials but was rescued by a judge who assigned him to work for a gun manufacturer. He is now wealthy and famous for his success with women. They become entangled due to Caroline’s brother and his ill fated involvement in gambling. It’s fun and funny with lots of misunderstandings, but also deeply romantic and satisfying.

Delightful rom com

Four chapters of monologuing thoughts with almost nothing moving story forward & too much heroine dithering over everything. I skipped over an entire chapter with little impact, painfully. Trying to stick it out & hopeful that something picks up. It took until chapter 12 for anything to happen between H/H. the last 5 chapters were the best. I did skip over chapters several times & rarely missed anything in the story.

I found the villains far more compelling bc their dialogue was more active & character driven to the story. IOW, no monologuing - just the sentence interaction. The H/H dialogues with each other & others just dragged, interspersed with endless inner monologuing between sentences about why or how it's said, the heroine's inner thoughts brought with continual dithering. However, by the end she became irrational, though choosing to express reactive anger & love more...so some character growth maybe?

Excruciatingly Wordy & Slow

Narrator has problems doing male voices and mispronounces many words. Female Protagonist
Is rather difficult to like.

Disgruntling
