About this listen

A fearless deep dive into the 2020 election from former MSNBC “Road Warrior” and now NBC Capitol Hill correspondent Ali Vitali, who covered the campaign trail every step of the way—investigating the gendered double standards placed on women presidential candidates of that cycle and those who came before, and what it will take for a woman to finally break the glass ceiling and win the White House.

Opening with the moment when Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were finally declared the winners of the 2020 race—the long, drawn-out journey towards who would next inhabit the White House, and the resulting and disputed defeat of Donald Trump, Electable is a sweeping look at a lingering question from that Presidential race. Why, when we saw more women run for President of the United States than ever before in our history, did we still not cross that final hurdle?

Following the 2020 race minute by minute as the reporter embedded with Elizabeth Warren, Ali Vitali witnessed up-close the way that our most recent election was unique—not simply for the way in which the incumbent conducted himself, but for the ways in which the field, rich with Democrats from all kinds of backgrounds, was both modern but also more of the same. With more female candidates than ever before, this was a history-making race, and yet these women—most of them incredibly qualified with decades of public service on their resumes—dealt once again with a different level of scrutiny than their male counterparts.

Woven throughout is close examination of the treatment of Hillary Clinton, Geraldine Ferraro, Shirley Chisholm, and those on the right as well. Grappling with ideas around the “likeability” and “electability” issues, as well as fundraising hurdles many female candidates face, Vitali asks the same questions she and so many have been grappling with for decades, but especially since Hillary Clinton’s devastating defeat in 2016: Why is it so hard for a woman to be taken seriously as a presidential contender? What will it take for men and women to be held to the same standard? What happens next?

Electable tackles these questions, with specific, behind-the-scenes, play-by-play detail.

Gabbard, Harris, Williamson, Gillibrand, Warren, Klobuchar…and then there were none.

Read and listened it was so good

I read the book and couldn’t put it down so I needed to listen to the author telling her own story. Hoping this book helps change the narrative of covering women in politics…and we can finally have a woman President.

Excellent book

Ali Vitali is a smart reporter with great political instincts. She brings these qualities to this book. She picks up where Rebecca Traister left off in Big Girls Don’t Cry. Looking forward to Ali’s reporting on the 2024 campaign trail.

Enjoyed

I enjoyed the book and the author’s reading it. Of course I definitely would love to see less old white man making decisions for half the population. We need complete representation.

Electable

This is a front row seat to how our elections eliminate women from high leadership. May this book make everyone think differently.

Enlightened

Enlightened! It’s 8/2024 and Biden recently announced Kamala Harris will run for president in his stead for the 2024 presidential race. I just finished reading/listening to this audio book. It’s so frustrating to hear how sexist the politics was/is for the women running. It’s funny to hear this now while in THIS election cycle.. cause the same issues are at play. You know, you don’t know how PROPHETIC times are until you have the blessing of hindsight. The moment on the debate stage in 2020 Kamala respectfully told Joe that he supported segregated bussing and that little girl was her (- they play the clip now all the time)… anyways, because of that respectful discussion debate with him about those effects on Race and its impact on her life, you come to realize that was a catalyst moment in time… it led to him listening …. Hearing Warren and Klobuchar and the other women talking about the disrespect on the campaign trail when they were more qualified than the men running… it led to him listening… and when he got the spot for Dem primary, Biden announced in 2020 that he was ONLY seeking a female VP to partner with …. And that he was only putting a woman on Supreme Court if he got the chance…. And he honored his word… both times…. Here again, he’s elevating Kamala to be first female president… he’s fulfilling a prophecy… and only he could do it. Joe Biden is going to go down in history as the best President second to Obama. I predict that once Kamala gets in the POTUS seat, the gates will open for future female presidents. We are in historic times in 2024. Don’t BLINK or you’ll miss something great! I enjoyed this book and as a woman and a voter I appreciate the transparency. I FELT the disappointments in ways I didn’t from watching the news. Great job Ali!

Educational AND Fun

This is an extremely well written book about the double standard for women in American politics. The factual narrative is well tempered by many personal notes.
