About this listen
Some time ago, dogs became as interwoven in the American culture as baseball, apple pie, and the Fourth of July. In fact, in most households, dogs have even trumped evolution itself and jumped straight to being four-legged “humans”, adorned with human names, designer outfits, and a place at the family dinner table. They’re no longer dogs to us. They're family!
Yet, as nationally recognized, award-winning animal behaviorist and master trainer Bryan Bailey explains in his book Embracing the Wild in Your Dog, for all that man has done to carve the wolf from the wild to create a surrogate human, today's dog is still a wolf at heart and the accompanying instincts borne from such ancestry defines how the dog approaches its world.
Reflective of his extensive background - studying wolf and other predatory behaviors worldwide, working alongside law enforcement and special service dogs, training in US Navy dolphin and sea lion projects, etc. - Bailey emphasizes the damaging and paralytic problem of attaching our human traits to our pets. Believing in a fairy tale world where dogs possess the same moral consciousness and sense of altruism as attributed to humans has led to a drastic increase in leash laws, dogs being outlawed in a rising number of city and national parks, some breeds being banned in several states, an alarming escalation of aggression to humans, a rising cost in homeowner and business insurance, and a record number of clinically maladaptive dogs.
Through Embracing the Wild in Your Dog, listeners will gain the knowledge and tools to activate and deactivate natural impulses and mechanisms in their dog, leading to the harmonious existence and control they’ve always dreamed of.

Few of us meet our dogs at Day One. The dog who will eventually become an integral part of our family, our constant companion, and our best friend is born without us into a family of her own. A puppy's critical early development into the dog we come to know is usually missed entirely. Dog researcher Alexandra Horowitz aimed to change that with her family's new pup, Quiddity (Quid). In this scientific memoir she charts Quid's growth from wee grub to boisterous sprite, from her birth to her first birthday.

Story
The Underdogs tells the story of Karen Shirk, felled at age 24 by a neuromuscular disease and facing life as a ventilator-dependent, immobile patient, who was turned down by every service dog agency in the country because she was "too disabled". Her nurse encouraged her to tone down the suicidal thoughts, find a puppy, and raise her own service dog. Karen did this, and Ben, a German shepherd, dragged her back into life.

Story
Dogs are the most social animals on the planet, second only to humans in their ability to read and understand emotion. Even chimps and bonobos, our closest genetic relatives, are no match for dogs when it comes to social cognition. Jennifer Arnold understands this better than anyone, having spent the past 25 years training service dogs for people with disabilities at Canine Assistants. She is a pioneer in the emerging field of "bond-based" dog training.

Animals bring out the goodness, humanity, and optimism in people and speak directly to our souls. This joyous, inspiring, and entertaining Chicken Soup collection relates the unique bonds between animals and the people whose lives they've changed: such as the dolphins who helped a paralyzed woman heal when doctors offered little hope; the dog who brought life into a failing marriage; the kitten who helped a mother mourn; and the flying squirrel who taught a man the power of laughter.

Story
As a SEAL on combat deployment in Iraq, Mike Ritland saw a military working dog in action and instantly knew he found his true calling. While the SEAL teams had used dogs in the past, they never had dogs trained specifically by SEALs, for SEALs. To fill this void, Ritland started his own company after he retired, training and supplying dogs for the West Coast SEAL teams. He knew that less than 1% of all working dogs had what it takes to contribute to the success of our nation’s elite combat units. He searched the globe for animals who fit this specific profile.

Story
Is it really human nature to stab one another in the back in our climb up the corporate ladder? Competitive, selfish behavior is often explained away as instinctive, thanks to evolution and "survival of the fittest", but in fact, humans are equally hard-wired for empathy. Using research from the fields of anthropology, psychology, animal behavior, and neuroscience, Frans de Waal brilliantly argues that humans are group animals.

Spellbinding!
I too had a mentor who has now departed this life. He left me with many things to reflect on and ponder about dogs and their ancestor, the wolf. I loved every minute of this must read! Even the parts that are difficult to hear but absolutely necessary to comprehend if we are to live in harmony and responsibly with those which we have tamed.
Respectfully, Sheila Gordon

Interesting Perspective
However, if someone misinterprets this information, it could lead to their dog being abused. This book has been enlightening about the origin of dogs and has given me new insight into my interactions with them.

Ranting narcissistic drivel criticizing call Dog professionals while offering exactly 08 information or insight
I listened to more than half of this book, and in that time, gleaned nothing. I I have read perhaps 80 books about and other animal behavior by professionals such as veterinary behaviorist, he fall adjusts, and the most respected professionals in the world of dog training or animal behavior. I would recommend almost everyone of them over this book, which again, teaches nothing; it is just a rant of how ignorant The author finds everyone else in the dog world to be.

Cue eyeroll
Yes, the author is very smart. he knows more than anyone else. I just don't need him to spend half the book telling me how amazing and perfect he is. And I definitely don't want to hear his opinions on child rearing and why Americans are weak and stupid. I bought this book to learn about my dogs behavior and I feel like all I learned was how wonderful the author believes himself to be.
