About this listen

This story is dedicated to all the victims of sexual slavery in German concentration camps, who had to endure inhumane suffering under the Nazi regime. For many years after the atrocities had been committed, both sides - the abusers and the abused - still vehemently denied certain aspects of the Holocaust, and even the victims refused to admit the ugly truth about their incarceration, some out of fear, some out of shame, until several women decided to break an unofficial oath of silence, and brought their stories to life. This book is based on one of those stories. Emilia is a young Jewish woman, whose life slowly turns into a nightmare as she finds herself facing a dreadful choice: to secure her family's very existence by offering herself to one of the men who had put her behind the walls with barbed wire, or perish together with the least fortunate ones. Only, the Krakow ghetto and her very first abuser pale in comparison to what is yet to come, as she's being sent to a place that soon will turn into her own personal hell and that will scar her for life.

A truly moving story

I loved this book. I did not, however, think the narrator did a good job. Throughout the book she often mispronounces Emilia’s name.

Great Story!

I loved this book for many reasons. One of the main reasons is that it presents topics about survival and the holocaust that I have never heard before and I have read many many books on the holocaust and the human experience. Another main reason I like this book is that it kept my interest from beginning to end!

Emilia

Good story, heart warming in places, good philosophies. Ellie should do a follow up on this story, so much to tell and build on.

Amazing

Loved the narrator! Amazing heartbreaking and heartwarming story. It was good to read something from this horrible time in history from a woman's perspective.

This sticks with me. Will return to it.

Powerful story of survival and redemption. I highly recommend this book for those who experienced sexual abuse, despite it being triggering in places. The forgiveness Emilia develops later on is truly healing. It is what I have learned to do. Amazing tale that many can draw encouragement from during challenging times.

Emilia

I loved everything about this book except for what happened to Emilia in the war. I couldn’t believe the viciousness of the nazis. The book was very well written and the narrator was excellent. I would recommend reading it.

The emotions that this book will tear from you!!!

Where does Emilia rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is by far the most emotional audio book I have ever listened to. The main character, Emilia, goes through so many horrifying moments, and hearing it brought to life is heartbreaking!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Emilia?

Listening to Emilia talk about what life was like at the camp, and what she and her friend went through was so emotional!

Have you listened to any of Sofia Willingham’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I don't know that I've listened to her work before, but I fully plan to find more of her work.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This story made a tear come to my eye several times!

Any additional comments?

Ellie Midwood is an amazing author to begin with, and hearing this story out loud is an amazing experience!!

The darkest time indeed

The tale of sacrifice and resilience told with brutal honesty. Unforgettable and painfully moving. One more brilliant book from Ellie Midwood!
