About this listen

When it comes to estate planning and the effective transfer of wealth, most discussions involving the terms wealth and money use those terms interchangeably. Although the two are not the same, most estate planners today do not even broach this concept with their clients or include the less-tangible aspects of wealth as they draft an estate plan. They simply develop an estate plan that prepares the family's financial assets to be dumped, divided, deferred, and dissipated among the members of the next generation.

These estate plans typically reflect a very linear way of thinking. In other words, if transferring some amount of financial wealth is good, then transferring more financial wealth is better. Not only is this approach is myopic and simplistic, but it's ultimately destructive because it focuses on the fire (the result) and not on the flint and kindling (the tools and resources that produce the result). Entrusted lays out the foundations of entrusted planning process, which aligns the principles and values of a family with their tangible assets and prepares future generations to build a true and lasting legacy. It's a process that draws from the very origins of estate law, which placed the highest value on who was involved - on who was entrusted.

By focusing on the means to an end (education, personal character, home ownership, entrepreneurship, charitable service) as opposed to the end (stocks, bonds, real estate, and businesses), entrusted planning has the greatest potential to do the maximum amount of multigenerational good with the least amount of collateral damage. Entrusted families have goals that are both deep and broad. They're less interested in preparing their families to be rich and more interested in preparing them to manage, sustain, and carry on a rich legacy.

I want what they are Selling/Practicing.

loved it and had to start n stop a few times as it kindah....won't say dragged but very monotonous in tone and inflection of the reader's voice. however he was clear and concise just very "steady".

however it's the kindah book you have to be genuinely interested in this subject matter to appreciate.

sounds complicated to erect but nk I imagine they have systems in place to have this kindah Trust set up.

Best book I’ve ever read

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. It changed my perspective about so much - of really building a legacy where the can pass down not only my assets but my values to several generations after me. Highly recommend.

Entrusted: Leaving behind, a worth-while legacy

After reading this informative, provacative book - and in better understanding pertinent reasons 'why' - wealth equates to more than just money, the idea of making my kids trustafarian's, couldn't be more distant from my mind. Never too late - or early to start planning

This book along with "Family Fortunes" by Bill and Will Bonner and "What would the Rockefellers Do?" by Garrett Gunderson have completely changed my perspective from planning for "retirement" to planning for a legacy.

Highly recommend "The Alternative Answer" by Bob Rice on alternatives to Wall Street.

I Highly Recommend This Book!

This book has been sitting on my "to read" shelf for far too long. Having long been a fan of David York's (and now, Andy Howell!), I just hadn't gotten around to reading Entrusted. SO glad that I started - and finished - reading this book! Extraordinarily well written and helpful for any of us working with wealthy & affluent clients and their families. This is now on my "must read" list for every client serious about how to do family and wealth succession "right." (Along with David's book, Riveted, as a companion to this book.) Entrusted is extremely well laid out, wonderfully descriptive without being overly technical, and a brilliant smattering of stories to make their points. So well done.Thank you gentlemen!

Engaging and inspiring

I never thought I would be so engrossed by such a seemingly dry topic but Andrew has a methodology towards estate planning that flips the whole topic on its head and inspires incredibly thought provoking notions on something that from a distance seems obvious. If you have a family and a legacy to pass on, read this book!
