About this listen

Welcome to Equillian, a nautical world where magic is outlawed, pirates plague the seas, and the fates of humankind are destined by the stars. Our story begins in a time when Equillian's precincts stand united, but their people are divided between the impoverished and the privileged. With the alchemists enchanted objects having been banned for the last 28 years, steam power is on the rise and a mysterious element whispers of unparalleled power. Here, Bastian and Felix live a simple life, picking pockets and pulling cons on the streets of Westdock, dreaming of the chance to change their stars. But that’s all turned upside down on Bastian’s 16th birthday when his coming of age celebration leads them on an unexpected adventure that will challenge everything they know and change their world forever.

I'm officially hooked

Loved every moment except when the story ended. I can't wait to read more! Interesting characters with an enthralling story that ventures through an inventive world. I want/need to know what happens next! Where has Casio been all these years and what is his story. I want to know more about Equillian! Great read, highly recommend to all.

So many wonderful elements

This book had so much to offer, and I really enjoyed it! The author did an incredible job at incorporating so many fun elements, including pirates, magical fantasy adventures, thieves, royals, battles and some really interesting and unique birds! The book was fast paced, and kept the listener fully engaged. The world was really well described, and I got a wonderful picture in my head of each scene and character. I will absolutely be looking forward to book two!

Highly entertaining!

I had heard about the book through a friend and was afraid of the time commitment to reading it and of getting too involved in a series. I am a stay at home dad, so little reading time, but a lot of listening time is available to me. As soon as I heard Equillian’s Key came out on Audible, I jumped at it, and I am glad I did.
Great characters, a quick story with fun twists throughout. The world the series is set is intriguing, and offers some depth as it slowly opens up to the reader, but doesn’t bog down the story. I am very excited for K. L. Harris’s next installment!

Also, the narration in the audio version fits well and is engaging.

High fantasy meets Pirates of the Caribbean

In Equillian’s Key (Book 1), KL Harris introduces us to orphaned Star Children turned street boys, Bastion & Felix, & their childhood friend Gwenna, tailor’s daughter & skilled magician. We meet our trio as they are hurtling into adulthood. Will they & the ties that bind them weather the storms ahead?

But first we’ll learn what happened to the Finley Brothers & nephew Casio & what forced a ban on The Alchemists’ enchanted objects, upending life for the people of Equillian.

How will events long ago continue to shape the lives of our three friends & all the citizens of Equillian? What’s with this mysterious ghost element swirling around everything? And do the Night Watchers really live on high above, observe all & guide the Fates? What intrigues & corruptions hold sway as we see the highborn operate outside the law, feed their own greed & subvert the poor, powerless & starving? Who conceals evil, who suppressed sorrow & who deep goodness & kindness? And how do the pirates, dragons, airships & enchanted objects factor in?
