About this listen

Vampirates is a colorful extravaganza with a wildly eccentric cast and lashings of swashbuckling adventure, punctuated with horror and old-school romance.

Conor and Grace are twins, recently orphaned after their widowed father's death. Rather than being adopted by the town's busy-bodies, they decide to set sail for new pastures in their father's last single possession, his sailboat. But a vicious storm capsizes their boat, and the twins are separated. Two mysterious ships sail to their rescue, each picking up one twin before disappearing into the mist. Conor wakes to find himself on a pirate ship and is soon being trained up with a cutlass. Meanwhile, Grace finds herself locked in a darkened room, as the vampirates wait for night to fall and their feasting to begin.

Determined to find each other, yet intrigued by their new shipmates, the twins are about to embark on the biggest adventure of their life.

Love this book

I’ve always loved reading this series I have read the first make 13 times and tried to continue on with the rest I wasn’t able to always stopping at the fourth so having it in audio helps a lot to actually finish. I love the story it’s touching in some ways. I would highly recommend giving it a chance.

It was a good book

It was a great book. I personally would love more romance but that’s just my take nothing like twilight.

Fantastic!

It has a cheesy title...one I honestly didnt think I would like. But it is so well written it actually caught my attention and held it. I didnt want to stop listening!

Decent... with a lackluster finale

I actually found that I enjoyed the majority of this book more than I originally expected. The imagery was very good, the dialogue, though immature in some places (not as in childish, but rather like an undeveloped or unschooled method of writing), was good overall.

I was very pleased with the narrator. I plan to see if he has narrated any other selections within my preferred genres. Even if the selection fall outside of my "norm," it wouldn't be the first time I've chosen a book just for the skills of the speaker.

Major "Con" - The ending. To say it left things wanting would be an understatement. Suppose, for example, I wrote a seven-hour book about someone being hungry. For the majority of the book, I detail aspects of the hunger, the sufferer, and his/her environment. Then, at the very end, I wrap it up with, "Then Steve found a $10 bill in his coat pocket, so he walked over to buy a sandwich. -THE END" -Grrrrr. I hate when writers can't put together an acceptable finale. Add to that the fact that it passed through the hands of an editor who decided, "Eh, it'll work."

If not for the ending, I'd have rated the book higher. For those who aren't as particular about endings, it's a good listen - otherwise, save a credit and use it on another book.

One of the books that got me to read

I own the hard copy. I read this when I was in.. 6th grade? I loved every moment of it. I hated reading but this made me want to read. To me the story was amazing! I felt it was such an original story! So now I’m going to listen to it as an adult and relive the adventure.

slow narrator but good story

narrator is quite slow but nice tone and annunciation, listened at 1.2x. loved this series as a kid so I'm having a reread via audible.

also wanted to leave a review that this is book 1 since the title and description don't help!

Immencely enjoyable!

Throughout the entire book, I was caught hanging on to every word more than a few times. I can't wait for the story to continue!

its engagingly written but slow structure names it a bit too easy to put down. scenes are interesting but don't add to a more interesting whole

Entertaining

As a whole, this story is very entertaining. The story is a little corny and predictable and the romance happens between 14-15 year olds so it's a little strange. The Narrator does a good job in the beginning, but starts to forget accents as the story progresses. Over all, I wouldn't probably buy it again.
