About this listen

There are no good guys in the world of shadows...but maybe some bad men are better than others.

Derek Hawthorne was born to be an agent of the Red Room. Literally. Raised in a conspiracy which has protected the world from the supernatural for centuries, he's never been anything other than a servant of their agenda. Times are changing, though, and it may not be long before their existence is exposed.

When a routine mission uncovers the latest plan of the magical terrorist, the Wazir, Derek finds himself saddled with a new partner. Who is the mysterious but deadly Shannon O'Reilly? What is her agenda? Couple this with the discovery the Red Room has a mole seeking to frame Derek for treason, and you have a plot which might bring down a millennium-old organization.

Can he stop the Wazir's mission to expose the supernatural? And should he?

Great Story with Fun Characters

The overall story was set at a good pace. While the beginning was a little bit of scene setting and discussion, it quickly went to the action and the conflict. The main character wasn't as funny as he thought he was, but it was still very pleasant to listen to. I wasn't able to predict where this book was going or who really was the on the opposite side and even until the end you can kind of empathize with some of the motivations. Not justify, but empathize. The one thing I loved about the story is Ben. I believe this is just one of those overexaggerating uncles that has the answer to almost everything. He was a fun character and it's a shame he only came towards the end. Anyway, great story and I plan on continuing the series.

MIB meets Supernatural

Like MIB? Like Supernatural? This is a great story. I have read many other C.T. Phipps books and enjoyed them. Pair that with Jeffrey Kafer who does great narrations, especially this involving secrets societies and comfy Constantine/John Wick style characters. They pair together very well. The main character has enough backstory to do a few other books and the organization enough Rich characters and histories for whole series’ to fill out. As is this one has monsters, myths, betrayals, new allies, old allies, great adventures and battles with an endgame that will settle the fate and future of the world. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Great story

I think the book has a fun story. Plenty of nerdy references.

Jeffrey Kafer did a great job with the tone of voice for the main character who is a tough spy who has seen it all. While Mr. Kafer did vary his voice for the other characters in the story, I wish that he could have made them more distinctive.

Overall a great story and I highly recommend.

Hard-Core Special Unit 2!

Hard-core Special Unit 2 with characters that are surprisingly vulnerable yet resourceful enough to survive.

Mundanes, wizards, mythical beasties and warring factions in today's world come together as friends and enemies. One man, Derek Hawthorne discovers it more than just uneasy truces and cold war tactics he has to deal with.

As a fan of both Mr. Phipps and Mr. Kafer, I was wondering just how Mr. Kafer was going to pull off such a gruff character. I had listened to him portray another character written by Mr. Phipps and was concerned I was always be thinking of that other character.

By the end of the book, I was sold that Derek Hawthorne was Jeffery Kafer! Fantastic job gentlemen!!

Crazy, highly entertaining magic carpet ride!

I loved this book!
It’s the third CT Phipps book performed by Jeffrey Kafer I listened to and it’s so far my favorite.
I’m usually not a big fan of urban fantasy but this book takes a fresh, creative and highly entertaining take on it!
There are so many interesting ideas in this book and the world building is top notch.
As always, the narrator does a fantastic job and is a delight to listen to.
James Bond meets Buffy, highly recommended!
And yes there really is a magic carpet lol

Like a snarky James Bond meets Supernatural

Esoterrorism has everything I've come to look for in a C.T. Phipps book. It’s full of action and intrigue, but also deep and well-written characters. While the plot is thick enough to make it a great thriller, its irreverent tone and humor keep it light enough to balance everything out. And for those that will appreciate it, you’ll also find a cast of multicultural and inclusive characters that feel natural, but yet there is no obvious and in-your-face attempt at social justice indoctrination.

While the story and plot of Esoterrorism are great, the highlight of any of Phipps’ books is the characters. One of my favorite things about many of his books is though they are part of different series, most take place in the United States of Monsters, and the main characters in one book will often be included as a supporting character in another book. Esoterrorism works as a prequel to many of the other series and you get to learn more of the original stories of characters from other books. So if you like any of the other books, you’ll find Esoterrorism to be another great book to read. If you haven’t read any of the other books, you’ll find Esoterrorism is a great place to start your addiction to the rest of the United States of Monsters series.

As far as the audiobook version goes, you’ll see a pattern in my other reviews: C.T. Phipps is a kick-ass author and Jeffery Kafer is an awesome narrator. And when two great artists have worked in a multi-series partnership to produce several audiobooks, their talent tends to enhance the final product to a level that is more amazing than either could be alone. Esoterrorism (and other series which both are part of such as Agent G, Cthulhu Armageddon, and The Supervillainy Sage) is a great example of the excellent work that you get out of such a partnership.

Special thanks to C.T. Phipps, who provided me with this book at my request.

Fantastic start to a new supernatural series......

Esoterrorism is the first in what I hope is an ongoing series. I don't want to reveal any spoilers, so I will try to keep my review vague in details. The book features Derek Hawthorne, an agent for a secret government agency known as the Red Room that polices the supernatural creatures living on Earth as well as keeping their existence hidden from the general population. The world building in this book is phenomenal; the author paints a vivid picture of the paranormal without getting bogged down in confusing detail. Imagine combining Harry Potter with Men in Black with James Bond, and you have an idea of the world in which Derek operates.

In Esoterrorism, Derek is tasked with preventing an evil mastermind from ruining all the work of the Red Room. He is joined in this task by a new partner, Shannon, who might be hiding some magical powers of her own. Although I liked Derek for his dry sense of humor and self-deprecating internal dialogue, it was the women in the story that stole the show. Shannon is one kick-ass spy with a hilarious sense of humor, the sibling banter between Penny and Derek is touching, and Lucy, Penny's girlfriend and Red Room magical gadget maker, is goofy and sweet. The book has a high level of action and violence, but it is all very superficial - no blood and guts or gore. If you want a book with plenty of intrigue and excitement with a touch of romance and comedy, Esoterrorism is the perfect choice.

The narration by Jeffrey Kafer is as exceptional as always. His performances are always flawless, the sound quality is incredibly professional, and he can make even the most boring story (which this is definitely NOT) enjoyable. I highly recommend anything narrated by Kafer and Esoterrorism in particular.

Fantastic!

Loved it from start to finish. The story and characters were brilliantly done. The serious tone was broken up with smart historical references and intelligent humor.

I’ve been a fan of Jeffery Kafer for awhile. Once he narrates a book no other will do. Another great delivery.

I received this audiobook at my request in exchange for an unbiased review.

Thank you very much for the opportunity to review this book. It was my pleasure..

Fun Ride

Not a big fan of the PI Noir style narration, but the story wins through. I will definitely be continuing to the next in the series. Would like to know more about the supernatural characters in this world.
