About this listen

The funny, heartbreaking, wonderfully told story of love, family and overwhelming loss which led Emily Dean to find hope and healing in the dog she always wanted.

Growing up with the Deans was a fabulous training ground for many things: ignoring unpaid bills, being the most entertaining guest at dinner, deconstructing poetry. It was never home for the dog Emily craved.

Emily shared the lively chaos with her beloved older sister, Rachael, her rock. Over the years the sisters' bond grew ever closer. As Rachael went on to have the cosy family and treasured dog, Giggle, Emily threw herself into unsettled adventure - dog ownership remaining a distant dream.

Then, tragically, Rachael is diagnosed with cancer. In just three devastating years Emily loses not only her sister but both her parents as well.

This is the funny, heartbreaking, wonderfully told story of how Emily discovers that it is possible to overcome the worst that life can throw at you, that it's never too late to make peace with your past and that the right time is only ever now, as she finally starts again with her very own dog - the adorable shih-tzu named Raymond.

A poignant story with moments of light and dark

Beautifully read by the author, this powerful story of love and loss is a reminder to all of us to live in the moment. And it’s also very funny. Highly recommended

A-mazing. Thank you, Emily and Ray!!

I cannot tell you how much I loved this brilliant book.

So MUCH of it is similar to so many aspects of my own life. But anyone would really get something out of this - dare I say - life-changing book.

I loved the audio because it was Emily herself narrating. She tells a great story as it is (Frank Skinner on Absolute Radio every Saturday, anyone? - also thoroughly recommended).

I laughed. A lot. And I definitely cried. A lot. Emily Dean is whip smart, beautiful, funny .....

I could not imagine a reason you would not love this book.

Really enjoyed it and would recommend

Me and my Wife have listened to the Frank Skinner show for many years now and it's my favourite pod cast. I have to admit both of us did not like Emily Dean to start with, but have grown to like her and really enjoy her part on the show over the years. so I was somewhat worried that reading this book as I imagined her having a privileged back ground that might have turned me off her and my favourite show. I can only say it had the opposite effect and I like her even more.
