Publisher's summary

High in the Andes, Dr. Henry Conklin discovers a 500-year-old mummy that should not be there. While deep in the South American jungle, Conklin's nephew, Sam, stumbles upon a remarkable site nestled between two towering peaks, a place hidden from human eyes for thousands of years. Ingenious traps have been laid to ensnare the careless and unsuspecting, and wealth beyond imagining could be the reward for those with the courage to face the terrible unknown. But where the perilous journey inward end - in the cold, shrouded heart of a breathtaking necropolis - something else is waiting for Sam Conklin and his exploratory party. A thing created by Man, yet not humanly possible. Something wondrous . . . something terrifying.

Running together

Don’t know if the book is written this way but story line run back and forth with no pause to the point that you have trouble following where you are and with whom. Story was interesting but hard to follow

Great blend of history and science

I'm generally a fan of Mr. Rollins use of history, science and fiction to create a unique brand of entertaining storytelling. I enjoyed a lot.

The Heaven's answer

The novel really hit one my interest in historical civilizations partic'ly the Inca. Do I truly applied the author sticking close to what we belief there culture would have been if survived till today do I was disappointed in how Inquisitors came off strong then near the end of the novel they fell like dominos to abit of tricky like thecigaret part. An the narrator sould have worked on his spsnish/tribal accent for the Inca and Inquisitor people because they all sound american except the young boy and ince kings because of there ages and such. An the the scifi twist at the end felt like you wear putting it be to much on it after everything else the chacthers saw and figured out threw the novel.

A very different story

We liked it a lot. Wished it hadn't skipped around so much. A little hard to follow at times but otherwise, very Interesting.

It's OK. Not his best book.

Overall it wasn't bad but I enjoyed Amazonia and Black Order more. This was less impressive.

Fabulous book!!!

I have read this book multiple times. Surprising I never left a review. A bit of language, but the action and sit on the edge of your seat is worth it. Generally its mostly in the first part anyway and less later. Great great book. Very fun read

James Rollins is my Latest Greatest discovery !

My 1st read by Mr. Rollins and I must say he is extra ordinarily clever in his inventive content ceeation and delivery, his imagination is truly profound! He definitely did his homework on this one with all of the theoretical science involved. The pacing is very balanced with no apparent peaks and valleys anywhere and absolutely no wasted space or meaningless banter or chatter going on, just good steady content delivery from beginning to end. This may have been my 1st book by James Rollins but it is by far not my last !

Tough characters to voice

Any additional comments?

The story is great, no complaints there, and the narrator did a decent job... excepting some difficult characters to voice. The main characters all have distinct accents; Two men with Texas accents, a Boston accent, a (female) Irish accent, and several South American accents. Put them all together and it got to be fairly distracting at times.

OK to pass the time

the story line was OK, but would have been better with more adventure scenes. Slow at times and a bit repetitious of historical explanation.
